Marco Weißhaupt (born June 24, 1972 in Erfurt ) is a German football coach . He played as a player in the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV , SC Freiburg and Hansa Rostock , among others . Marco is the son or nephew of the twins Jörg and Horst Weißhaupt , who played together for many years for FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the GDR league and for Motor Nordhausen in the GDR league .

Player career

Marco Weißhaupt began playing football in 1978 at BSG Motor Nordhausen . In 1986 he switched to the children's and youth sports school in the district capital and thus to FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . At BSG Motor Nordhausen and later FSV Wacker 90 Nordhausen , Weißhaupt made the leap into the first men's team and played in the Erfurt district league and in the 1990/91 season in the last GDR league .

In the summer of 1992 he signed a contract with FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . On his achievements in the following two seasons of the Hamburger SV and signed Weißhaupt in 1994 for the Bundesliga . There he was unable to assert himself and after 13 appearances for HSV during the 1995/96 season he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for 1. FSV Mainz 05 . On the last day of the match, the midfielder prevented Mainz from relegating with his winning goal against VfL Bochum . At the end of the season, Weißhaupt returned to Erfurt and formed the offensive trio in the 1996/97 regional league season together with Daniel Bärwolf and Ronny Hebestreit . Overall, the three scored 54 goals this season, Marco Weißhaupt was also top scorer of the Regionalliga Nordost with 22 goals .

After this season, Weißhaupt dared a second time to jump into professional football and moved to SC Freiburg in the 2nd Bundesliga. There he was involved with 16 goals in the Bundesliga ascent of the Breisgau. In the following two seasons he was a regular for the Freiburg team in the Bundesliga. After things didn't go so well in the 2000/01 season, he moved to Hansa Rostock . There he made nine Bundesliga appearances and after a year moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for VfB Lübeck . After several unexcused absenteeism from training, Weißhaupt was dismissed without notice at the end of 2003 and moved to the regional league for Sportfreunde Siegen . But even there he could no longer build on his old heyday and from then on only played lower-class football, first for FC Teningen and later for FSV Wacker 90 Nordhausen . With 1. FC Gera 03 Weißhaupt rose in 2007 from the Thuringian League to the Oberliga Nordost-Süd . At the end of August 2009, the 37-year-old was signed by the Hessian league club SV 07 Eschwege , left the club after a year and rejoined 1. FC Gera 03, which had meanwhile been relegated to the Thuringian league again. Here he acted both as a player and as an assistant coach. After returning to the league and the dismissal of coach Jörn Schwinkendorf , he became player coach and sports director. From January 2012 to October 2014 Weißhaupt was playing assistant coach for the TSG Neustrelitz league team under coach Torsten Gütschow.

In total, Weißhaupt made 101 games (9 goals) in the Bundesliga and 74 games (22 goals) in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Coaching career

Marco Weißhaupt took over his first head coaching position in November 2014 when he took over the north-east upper division FC Pommern Greifswald . After the 2014/2015 season and restructuring in the club, Marco Weißhaupt and assistant coach Ralf Wichardt left the club. Since January 17, 2017 he has been the sports director in the third Austrian division (Regional League) at SK Austria Klagenfurt .

Records

Marco Weißhaupt missed four of six penalties in his Bundesliga time . With a hit rate of 33 percent, he is together with Dieter Eckstein the third worst penalty taker in the history of the Bundesliga. The weakest shooter is Marko Pantelić , who scores only 20 percent with one goal from five penalties, closely followed by Manfred Pohlschmidt , who only scored twice in eight attempts (25%).

Personal

His son Noah also plays for SC Freiburg and received his first professional contract there in autumn 2019.
