Princess Margaretha (2013)

Princess Margaretha Désirée Victoria, Mrs. Ambler (born October 31, 1934 at Haga Castle , Solna municipality ) is a Swedish princess . She is the eldest sister of the Swedish King Carl XVI. Gustaf .

Origin and education

Princess Margaretha was born as the first child of Gustav Adolf Hereditary Prince of Sweden and his wife Sibylla von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha at the royal family seat of Haga Castle outside Stockholm . Her paternal grandparents were Gustav VI. Adolf of Sweden and Princess Margaret of Connaught ; her maternal grandparents were Carl Eduard (Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) and his wife Viktoria Adelheid from Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg . Margaretha was born under the reign of her great-grandfather Gustav V of Sweden . The Danish Queen Margrethe II.is her first cousin. Although she was the oldest child, she was not entitled to the throne as a female descendant according to the Swedish Constitution then in force .

Margaretha grew up at Schloss Haga together with her three sisters Birgitta , Désirée and Christina . They were known as the "Haga Princesses", led a public life and received a lot of attention from the newspaper media of the time. The death of her father in a plane crash in 1947 was a decisive experience for Margaretha, to which she reacted very strongly psychologically. As a distraction, she was sent to her aunt Ingrid in Denmark for a year .

Margaretha initially received private lessons at Haga Castle, later she attended the “Märthaskolan” fashion school in Stockholm , where she was trained as a dressmaker and seamstress. She also studied child care .

Marriage and children

Margaretha and John Ambler married in June 1964

In the 1950s, Margaretha had a brief relationship with the Scottish aristocrat , jazz pianist and author Robin Douglas-Home , a nephew of the future British Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home . Both had met in a London night club, where Douglas Home worked as a bar pianist. Douglas-Home also visited Margaretha in Sweden; however, the two did not get married. There was speculation in the press that Margaretha's mother Sibylla had forbidden her daughter to connect. Ingrid Björnberg, Margaretha's educator and confidante, said in her memoir that the breakup of the relationship was based on Margaret's refusal to marry Douglas-Home.

In 1963, Margaretha met her future husband, British businessman John Ambler , 10 years her senior, at a dinner party in Great Britain . Their engagement was announced on February 28, 1964. The wedding took place on June 30, 1964, in the church of Gärdslösa on the island of Öland . Margaretha wore a wedding dress from the Stockholm fashion school “Märthaskolan”, where she had once studied, and a traditional wedding crown from the island of Öland. As a result of their inappropriate marriage, she lost her title of "Royal Highness". However, the king gave her the courtesy title of "Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler".

The couple settled at Chippinghurst Manor in Oxfordshire . The marriage had three children:

  • Sibylla Louise Ambler (* in London , April 14, 1965); she was named after her maternal grandmother Sibylla von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha. She married Baron Henning von Dincklage (* Esslingen am Neckar , April 29, 1971). The couple lives in Munich . They have two children together. The daughter Madeleine Charlotte Margaretha von Dincklage is the goddaughter of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and was the bridesmaid at her wedding;
  • Charles Edward Ambler (* in London, July 14, 1966);
  • James Patrick Ambler (* in Oxford , June 10, 1969).

The Amblers led a private, largely withdrawn life in Great Britain; you saw them almost exclusively at family celebrations. However, Margaretha took over the opening of the traditional Christmas bazaar of the Church of Sweden in Great Britain, which took place every year in London, for many years until the late 1990s . Due to financial difficulties, John Ambler had to sell the family estate Chippinghurst Manor in the early 1990s.

Margaretha and her husband John Ambler separated in 1994 but did not get divorced. Margaretha's husband John Ambler died on May 31, 2008.

Representative tasks

In June 1960, Margaretha visited the United States with her cousin Crown Princess Margrethe of Denmark and her aunt Princess Astrid of Norway on the occasion of Scandinavian Airlines' first transatlantic flight . During their visit, they traveled among others. a. to Disneyland and Hollywood ; they also visited the Paramount Studios in Los Angeles , where they met Dean Martin , Jerry Lewis and Elvis Presley .

Margaretha now lives alone in Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire in Great Britain. She does not perform any public duties for the Swedish royal family in Great Britain.

However, she regularly takes part in family celebrations (throne anniversaries, weddings, funerals) of the Swedish royal family. She was u. a. at the celebrations for the 60th birthday of her brother Carl XVI. Gustaf (2006), at the memorial service for the 40th anniversary of the throne of her brother Carl XVI. Gustaf (2013), present at the wedding of her niece Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden to Daniel Westling (2010), at the wedding of her niece Madeleine of Sweden (2013) and at the wedding of her nephew Carl Philip of Sweden (2015).
