History and architecture

After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Wiesbaden increased due to influx from the eastern regions . In 1960, Bishop Wilhelm Kempf established a new parish of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Kohlheck, a district of Wiesbaden-Dotzheim. The church was built according to plans by the Berlin architect Johannes Lackel . It was consecrated and named the Visitation of Mary on July 3, 1966, after Mary visited her relative Elisabeth .

The outline of the building is a capital M , symbolizing Mary, the mother of Jesus . The floor plan is the Star of David , which indicates that she was Jewish. In keeping with the times, the materials are primarily concrete, then slate and glass. Light falls from the west through the glazed tower side into the interior and illuminates the high wall behind the altar. To the right and left of the altar hangs a large abstract triptych by the Wiesbaden painter Otto Ritschl . The artist, who was considered degenerate from 1933 to 1945 , created the works in 1973 and 1976 as part of his later work. Large interlocking surfaces in bright colors invite you to meditation and prayer.

The church towers over the city and was nicknamed "God's finger pointing" and "soul launch pad". The parish became the parish of the larger parish of St. Peter and Paul in Wiesbaden-Schierstein on January 1, 2013 , which is formed from six former parishes in the west of Wiesbaden.
