Maria Nordman (born June 22, 1943 in Görlitz ) is a German-American sculptor and conceptual artist .

life and work

Nordman was born in Germany, grew up in France and graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles in 1967 with a degree in music, art, sculpture and film . She lives in Santa Monica , California .

From 1967 to 1969 Nordman created film environments and laser projections . Since 1970 she has been designing places that achieve complex aesthetic effects with minimal means (such as sunlight, color, air, water and clay). Man becomes part of these spaces.

“She brings the elements of light, air, earth and water into the city, creates places in public space and sees her work as offers. According to Nordman, what then arises is an »attention field«. Here people should experience the forces of nature spiritually. "

Nordman has been working on the concept of the Conjunctive New City for years . Drawings and collages framed in glass, which are kept upright in specially made wooden boxes (standing pictures) , are pulled out of the boxes by visitors during the exhibition to look at them. This means that they are exposed to sunlight at the same time.

Nordman creates unusual concepts for public spaces . This always stimulates new discussions. Nordman has written several theoretical treatises on space and sculpture.
