biography

Carey in July 2013

1970–1987: youth

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 or 1969 in Long Island , New York State, as the third child of Afro- Venezuelan technician Alfred Roy Carey and Irish opera singer and singing teacher Patricia Hickey. There are contradicting information about the exact year of birth.

Patricia Hickey and Alfred Roy Carey met in 1960 and married that same year. Carey was named after the title of the song They Call the Wind Mariah, the 1951 in the Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon (title dt. Paint Your Wagon ) for the first time was heard named. The multicultural family has moved several times over the years.

In 1973 the parents divorced; while Carey's sister, Alison, who was nine years older, stayed with her father, she and her brother Morgan grew up with their mother. At the age of four Carey started singing songs she heard on the radio. During elementary school, Carey performed well in her favorite subjects of literature, arts, and music. After several years of financial difficulties, her mother made enough money to move to a better area in New York. Mariah Carey started writing songs. She attended Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, as a singer-songwriter. Carey's singing skills continued to improve through singing lessons and training with her mother, which enabled her to master her whistle register from an early age . Her mother also opened up the world of classical opera to Carey. She never put Carey under pressure to become an opera singer. Carey recalls keeping her work as a singer-songwriter to herself and says of her mother, “She never said, 'You have to sing like an opera singer.' I respected the opera like crazy, but it didn't affect me. "

About her family and childhood, Mariah Carey said:

“Well, what does this mean? Am I a bad human? It's not that common to grow up in a multicultural family. But I'm happy with my cultural combinations. It was difficult for me to keep moving and seeing my parents split up. In the neighborhood I was ethnically different from the other children. That was a problem for me, everyone wanted to play with the 'white girls' and not with me. "

After finishing school in 1986, Mariah Carey tried her hand at backing vocals and began a relationship with Gavin Christopher, who was also very interested in music. Both founded a songwriter duo and were still looking for a keyboard player; “We called someone, but they couldn't come. We came across Ben Margulies by chance. Ben came into the studio and he really wasn't a good keyboard player - he was much more of a drummer - but we've kept in touch ever since and Ben turned out to be a good songwriter. ”After their first song Here We Go Round Again , they wrote more songs for a demo recording. Carey's mother married again, which is why Mariah left home and moved into a one-room apartment in Manhattan, which she also used as a studio. She later lived in a shared apartment with four other girls. During this time Carey worked in New York City as a waitress and cloakroom. On the side she tried relentlessly to gain a foothold as a singer. After completing a demo recording with four songs, she sent it to various record companies. Carey got an engagement with Brenda K. Starr, who made Latino pop in the 1980s and early 1990s. At a record company party, Starr played a demo tape to Columbia manager Thomas Mottola, who then signed Carey in 1988.

showing her single Vision of Love on The Wogan Show .

Carey's friendship with Starr also helped her find a record label to sign. Carey was eager to continue working with Margulies, but Mottola introduced Carey to producers Ric Wake, Narada Michael Walden and Rhett Lawrence. Mottola wanted to market Carey as the record company's lead female artist, like Whitney Houston and Madonna , who are the female stars on Arista and Sire Records . After completing her debut album of the same name, Mariah Carey , Columbia spent over a million dollars promoting the album. It hit record stores in June 1990.

In March 1991, her debut album made it to the top of the American Billboard 200 album chart . This success was helped by Carey's appearance at the 1991 Grammy Awards . Mariah Carey topped the Billboard charts for eleven consecutive weeks . At the 1991 Grammy Awards, Mariah won two Grammys in the categories Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her debut single Vision of Love . Four of the five singles released from the album reached number 1 in the official American singles chart Billboard Hot 100 (Vision of Love , Love Takes Time , Someday and I Don't Wanna Cry ), making Carey the first female artist ever and the second after the Jackson 5 , whose first four singles became number one hits. The first single Vision of Love was at the top of the charts for four weeks in the summer of 1990.

The second single Love Takes Time was able to build on the success of her debut single and became her second number one hit in the United States. The single stayed at number 1 for three weeks from November 10 to November 24, 1990. Carey won two BMI awards for the song in the R&B award categories for the song of the year and the songwriter award.

In December 1990, Someday was released as the third single. In March 1991 she was number 1 on the US charts for two weeks, for which Carey received another BMI award.

The March 1991 single I Don't Wanna Cry became Carey's fourth number-one hit in a row; she held number 1 in the USA for two weeks, for which she received the fourth BMI Award in a row. The fifth single, There's Got to Be a Way , was only released outside of the United States.

Mariah Carey became the most successful and best-selling album of 1991 in the United States, selling over 15 million copies in just one year.

Only a few months after the release of the debut album, the singer began working on her second work, entitled Emotions . According to Carey, the album pays homage to Motown soul music ; she wanted to pay tribute to the genre that had influenced her so much as a child. For the project she worked with Walter Afanasieff , Robert Clivillés and David Cole from the dance group C + C Music Factory . Carey ended her collaboration with her boyfriend Margulies.

On September 17, 1991 the second studio album Emotions was released worldwide . Critics rated the album even more positively than its debut. The album sold over 8 million times worldwide, but commercially it was unable to match the enormous success and sales figures of its predecessor. The theme song of their second album Emotions became their fifth consecutive number one on the US Billboard charts in October 1991 . So she was the only one so far ever to achieve the feat that all the first five singles in the American Billboard Hot 100 were number one hits (she broke the Jackson 5 record). Outside the United States, the song became Carey's most successful single since her debut with Vision of Love . It reached the top 5 in Canada and New Zealand and the UK top 20. In Australia, the song just missed the top ten. In the rest of Europe, the song was a moderate chart success. At the 1992 Grammy Awards , Emotions was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance , but lost to Something to Talk About by Bonnie Raitt . The song won a BMI R&B Award, so Carey continued her series, previously each of her singles had also won the BMI Award. The second single Can't Let Go ended Mariah's streak of number one hits as it only reached number 2 in the US, but was again awarded a BMI Award. The song Make It Happen , released in February 1992, reached number 5 on the Billboard charts as the third and final single on the album and was Carey's single with the least success to date.

After the release of their second album, critics asked Carey to go on a world tour to promote their material live. Although she said the tour proposal sounded intimidating to her because of her stage fright and the generally exhausting nature of her songs, critics suspected Carey was a "studio worm" and incapable was to prove her 5 octave voice for which she was known. To prove the opposite to the critics, Carey and Walter Afanasieff booked an appearance on MTV Unplugged , a TV program on MTV . Carey sang an unplugged version of each of her songs. A few days before the recording, Carey and Afanasieff thought of a cover version of an older song in order to surprise the audience. They chose the Jackson 5 song I'll Be There from 1970.

On March 16, 1992, the concert with Carey was recorded at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, New York. It was partly criticized that Carey's unplugged appearance was repeated several times a day on MTV, because normally such a program was only broadcast live once at the time. Encouraged by the success of the event, Sony released an EP and a video recording of it in June 1992 at reduced prices. The EP became a huge hit, refuting rumors that Carey was just a studio singer. The EP was awarded three platinum records in the United States and also achieved gold and platinum status in many European markets. The unplugged album became the second highest-grossing MTV unplugged album in history, and the release I'll Be There , originally by Jackson 5, was more successful than the original version. The second single was released from the album If It's Over , which, however, was only able to place in the Dutch charts. Carey sang the song at the 1992 Grammy Awards, among others .

1993–1996: marriage, Music Box and Daydream

In the spring of 1993 Carey began work on her third studio album, Music Box . Emotions had not been able to build on the commercial success of the debut album. So Carey and Columbia decided that the next album should be more pop influenced. During this time she often worked with Afanasieff, with whom she wrote and produced most of the songs on Music Box . Carey and Mottola began a relationship while recording the album. They married on June 5, 1993, guests at the ceremony included stars such as Barbra Streisand , Billy Joel , Gloria Estefan and Ozzy Osbourne .

Music Box was released worldwide on August 31st and immediately topped the American Billboard 200, but received different reception. Some praised the pop sound of the album, others criticized the fact that Carey's vocal qualities were not sufficiently emphasized. The first single Dreamlover became her seventh number one hit in the US in September 1993 and stayed at number one for eight weeks. This made it one of the most successful songs as well as the biggest number one hit (in weeks) of 1993 and her entire career. It was also Dream Lover honored in the US with a platinum record. Her second single, Hero , became one of Carey's most popular and inspired songs, and by Christmas 1993 it was the next number one hit in the US (her eighth). With Hero , Carey's popularity rose in Europe, where the single also hit the charts. With the release of the third single, Carey set another milestone. Her cover version of Badfingers Without You became her first number one hit in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. In the United States, the song only reached number 3. Due to its success, the album Music Box was also at the top of the charts.

The album became one of the most successful and best-selling of all time, with over 32 million units sold. Carey, who had not gone on tour for her first two albums, started her Music Box Tour in the USA , which included six concerts in North America. The short but successful tour was a big step for her as she was able to gain stage experience with the performances.

After the success of Music Box , Carey withdrew from the public and started a new project in the summer of 1994. It was kept a secret until Billboard magazine announced in its October issue that Carey would be releasing a Christmas album by the end of the year. In the summer of 1994 she recorded a duet with Luther Vandross : Endless Love , a song by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross , which was a number one hit in the United States as early as 1981. The song was released in August 1994 and again a great success in the USA with number 2. At this point Columbia was certain that Carey had established herself as a pop singer; they wanted to make Carey an entertainer now. The album Merry Christmas was released on November 1, 1994 and the same day followed with the first single with All I Want for Christmas Is You . The album became the best-selling Christmas album of all time with over 15 million units sold. In addition, All I Want for Christmas Is You was critically acclaimed and referred to as a “new modern Christmas carol alongside the classics”. Rolling Stone magazine described the song as a "Christmas Standard" and listed it at number 4 in the "Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs". Commercially, it became the most successful Christmas carol of all time and the most successful single by a Western artist in Asia, with 2.1 million units sold in the US alone. Right after Christmas Carey and Afanasieff started writing tracks for their next album.

On October 3, 1995, their fourth long-playing record Daydream was released . The album combines the pop music from Music Box with contemporary R&B and hip-hop influences. Carey helped shape it personally. The record label gave her more freedom, but then began to have doubts when Carey collaborated with rapper Ol 'Dirty Bastard on a remix of Fantasy . In addition, the new musical course led to tensions with Carey's then husband Tommy Mottola, who was also the label boss of the Columbia parent company Sony Music and who had planned Carey's career in detail up to that point. The more Carey took her musical future into her own hands, the more her marriage seemed to fall apart. Carey also recorded a cover version of the 1982 Journey song Open Arms for the album . It was released as the third single.

In September 1995, the first single Fantasy was released in an album version in which only she sings, as well as in a remix version, in which Carey was accompanied by the Wu Tang clan rapper Ol 'Dirty Bastard. The latter went straight to number 1 in the US charts. The concept of uniting pop singers and rappers in one feature (“feat.”) Became popular straight away and is now standard in Pop / RnB.

With Daydream Carey won two American Music Awards , Favorite Pop / Rock Female Artist and Favorite Soul / R & B Female Artist . She received four awards at the World Music Awards : World's Best Selling Female R&B Artist , World's Best Selling Overall Female Recording Artist , World's Best Selling Pop Artist and World's Best Selling Overall Recording Artist . The first single, Fantasy , was named Song of the Year at the BMI Awards and Favorite Song at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards. In the latter, Carey also won the Top Pop Female award . In addition, at the Billboard Music Awards there were prizes for the Hot 100 Singles Artist of the Year , Hot 100 Airplay (Always Be My Baby) , Hot Adult Contemporary Artist of the Year and Special Award for 16 weeks at # 1 for One Sweet Day , the latter the award for One Sweet Day , which was # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the longest time. However, at the 1996 Grammy Awards , Carey experienced a disappointment. Although the album was nominated for six awards and she performed One Sweet Day live with Boyz II Men , she did not win any of the trophies. The cameras showed her face in close-up, showing the disappointment. Until the album The Emancipation of Mimi , for which she won three Grammys, she no longer appeared there.

The second single, One Sweet Day, is inspired by Cole's death. Overall, Daydream became their best-selling album in the United States, becoming Cary's second album, after Music Box, to earn a Diamond record. The album sold over 25 million times worldwide. Critics have named it their best work; The New York Times called it the best album of 1995: "Carey's songwriting has taken a leap forward and relaxed, has become sexier and less dependent on dull clichés." Like last time Carey only started a short tour, Daydream World Tour . There were a total of seven concerts, three in Japan and four in Europe.

1997–2000: divorce, soundtracks, greatest hits and new records

In 1997 Carey and Mottola got divorced. Carey also split up with her manager. Under her new manager, the album Butterfly was released in September , on which Carey covered a song by Prince . The first single, Honey , entered the charts again at number 1. When My All was released after a long break in the USA and also directly achieved number 1, Carey was able to record the fifth number one hits in a row for the second time in her career.

In order to release an album in the following year, a collection of their hitherto greatest hits together with some bonus tracks appeared in November 1998 under the title Number Ones .

In the same year Carey released the song When You Believe , a duet with Whitney Houston . The song was originally recorded for the 1998 soundtrack to The Prince of Egypt . The duet was not only another chart success, it also won an Oscar .

In November 1999 new material came out under the title Rainbow . The album features the singles Heartbreaker and Thank God I Found You , which also topped the charts . For the first time in Carey's musical career, however, the album was no longer assigned to the genre Pop / Soul, but rather rhythm and blues .

At the end of 1999 another cover version followed with the Irish boy band Westlife , this time of Phil Collins ' Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) , which reached number 1 in the UK charts. After Without You (1994), this was her second number one hit in the UK and her last number one hit in the UK charts to date.

With the release of the album Rainbow Carey still fulfilled her contract with Sony Music; she left the label and signed a recording deal with Virgin Records in 2000.

Carey published nine albums from 1990 to 1999, of which a total of 122 million copies were sold.

2001–2004: Modest success with glitter and charm bracelet

Carey played a singer in the 1980s in the 2001 film Glitter: A Star . The film flopped and was nominated for the Golden Raspberry as the worst film of the year . While the film itself missed that award, Carey won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress of the Year.

"To say that Mariah's acting debut didn't go so well would be like saying that the Titanic leaked a bit."

Glitter, the first album that Carey released on Virgin Records, formed the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. The sales of the album fell short of the record company's expectations. The first single Loverboy, however, became the best-selling single of the year in the USA. In July 2001 Carey had a nervous breakdown and had to be treated in a clinic.

Due to the failure of Glitter , Virgin Records separated from Carey, who was signed by Universal Records a short time later and was able to record success again with the album "Charmbracelet", which was released in December 2002. That same year, she sang the American national anthem at the Super Bowl XXXVI at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans , Louisiana . This was followed by a supporting role in the film Wisegirls .

In May 2003 Carey returned to the charts with I Know What You Want (No. 3 on the US charts). In the same year she recorded her first remix album entitled The Remixes , which contains remixed versions of older songs. In the summer of that year Carey was honored with the Diamond Award at the World Music Awards in Monaco for over 150 million albums sold. That year she also completed a major world tour.

In October 2004 the song U Make Me Wanna , a duet with rapper Jadakiss , was released.

In 2005 Carey sang at the Live 8 concert in London and at Hurricane Katrina - Telethon Shelter from the Storm to raise money for the victims of the disaster. In August 2008 Carey and other singers recorded the benefit single Just Stand Up! produced by Babyface and LA Reid for the Stand Up to Cancer project to raise funds for research in translational medicine to fight cancer via the internet and television . On September 5, 2008, the singers performed the song live on television. In 2010 Carey was a member of the charity formation Helping Haiti , which re-recorded the song Everybody Hurts (originally by REM from 1992) to raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti .
