Georgine Henriette Marie Princess of Waldeck and Pyrmont (born May 23, 1857 in Arolsen ; † April 30, 1882 in Ludwigsburg ) was the first wife of the future King Wilhelm II of Württemberg to be a princess of Württemberg .

Life

Marie was the daughter of Prince Georg Viktor zu Waldeck and Pyrmont and Princess Helene von Nassau . So she belonged to the Waldeck family and was a sister of the Dutch Queen Emma and the last ruling Prince Friedrich von Waldeck-Pyrmont . She married Prince Wilhelm of Württemberg on February 15, 1877 in Arolsen . This marriage came from the first-born daughter Pauline (1877-1965) , who married Prince Friedrich Hermann zu Wied (1872-1945) in 1898.

Princess Marie's second motherhood ended tragically because her son Ulrich, who was born in Ludwigsburg on July 28, 1880, died a few months later, on December 28, 1880, in Stuttgart. The death of this prince later became a political issue because Ulrich remained the only son of King Wilhelm II and the succession to the throne would have fallen from the Protestant line to the Catholic line of the House of Württemberg had the November Revolution of 1918 not prevented this. The idea of being ruled by a Catholic king in the future, which was unpleasant for the evangelical Altwuerttemberg people , led to the rumor in their circles that Ulrich had fallen victim to a Catholic murder plot. This certainly untenable thesis throws a spotlight on the deep-seated prejudices that shaped the relationship between the two major denominations in Württemberg for a long time. Princess Marie died in April 1882 as a result of a stillbirth in childbed. She was buried in the old cemetery in Ludwigsburg.
