Marilyn Scott (jazz singer)

Marilyn Scott (born December 21, 1949 in Alta Dena , California) is an American jazz singer .

Scott sang with local bands when she was fifteen. She attended college in San Francisco and performed with local Latin jazz bands . She was discovered by Emilio Castillo , who brought her into his band Tower of Power as the leader of the vocal group . She then worked in Los Angeles as a studio musician with musicians and bands such as Spyro Gyra , the Yellowjackets , Hiroshima , Etta James and Bobby Womack . She also appeared in the musical Selma .

Scott's first recording under her name was a single version of Brian Wilson's God Only Knows , which got her on the Billboard Hot 100 , and which was followed by her first album, Dreams of Tomorrow . In addition to other albums, she also recorded soundtracks for films such as Torch Song Trilogy and Twins and composed a.o. a. for George Duke , Brenda Russell , Russell Ferrante , Jimmy Haslip , Terri Lyne Carrington and Bobby Caldwell .
