history

Before the port was established, there were mainly salt marshes in the area where the town is today , which were mainly used for duck hunting. The land was disrespectfully called tidal flats , but it was more like a wetland .

As early as the middle of the 19th century, the plan arose to build a commercial port in the area. A development company founded for this purpose in 1888 went bankrupt after just three years.

In 1916 the United States Army Corps of Engineers re- examined the plan to build a port, but came to the conclusion that it would be uneconomical. By order of the US Congress, a second investigation was carried out in 1936, which led to a different result. Nevertheless, preference was given to a port project in San Pedro and the funds actually earmarked for Marina del Rey went into the expansion of the port of Los Angeles.

In 1953, Los Angeles County borrowed two million dollars to finally complete the port project. However, the funds only covered half of the capital required to start the work, so that a federal law was still required. The foundation work began shortly after the law was passed.

Immediately before the construction work was completed, the almost completed harbor was badly affected by a winter storm in the winter of 1962/1963. The system was damaged in the millions. The plan was then expanded to include a protective pier , which the county had to raise an additional two million dollars to build. The port was officially opened on April 10, 1965. The total cost was approximately $ 36 million. Today the port is one of the county's largest sources of income.

On December 28, 1983, Dennis Wilson , a member of The Beach Boys, drowned at the berth of his former sailing yacht in the marina of Marina del Rey.
