Mario Aschauer

Mario Aschauer (born December 18, 1980 in Linz ) is an Austrian musicologist , harpsichordist and conductor .

Life

Mario Aschauer attended the Musikgymnasium Linz and at the same time began his studies in organ, piano, historical keyboard instruments and conducting in Linz and Salzburg . He passed the school leaving examination, received the diploma in conducting at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz at the age of 17 and gained his first experience as a conductor with the orchestra of the Linz Music High School, the Linzer Jeunesse Orchestra, the Innviertler Symphonie Orchester , the VOEST Choir Linz and the Virtuosi di Praga.

In 1998 he founded the “NovAntique Linz” ensemble, with which he specialized in the music of the late 18th century with historical instruments and outside the standard repertoire. The ensemble mainly played sacred, oratorical and symphonic works by Gassmann , Gossec , Lebrun , Kraus , Salieri and Wagenseil .

In 2001 he received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Association in Linz.

He studied musicology at the University of Vienna and completed his studies ( Mag. Phil. And Dr. phil.) In 2008 with distinction. His diploma thesis on “ Joseph Martin Kraus: Stella Coeli. Motet for solos, choir, orchestra and organ. Critical Edition ”he wrote in 2004 and his dissertation on“ German-language clavier textbooks in the 2nd half of the 18th century ”has been published as a manual for clavier schools (see publications ). For this dissertation he received a dissertation award. In 2011 he graduated from the “Harpsichord” concert course at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with distinction and the title “Mag. art. "from.

He began his work as a musicologist between 2004 and 2006 as a study assistant at the Institute for Musicology at the University of Vienna. From 2008 to July 2014, Aschauer was a research assistant for the New Schubert Edition at the Institute for Art and Music History Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences , and since 2012 as a member of the editorial team.

From 2012 to 2013 he lived in New Haven , where he was awarded a scholarship from the Max Kade Foundation at Yale University . After a short stay in Austria, Aschauer accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Musicology at the School of Music at Sam Houston State University in 2014 .

His research and publication activities focus on creative process research, mainly with Schubert, Bruckner and the piano performance practice in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Mario Aschauer maintains an extensive repertoire as a harpsichordist and fortepianist, specializing in the keyboard music of the Austrian Baroque. With the Calamus Consort, which won first prize at the International HIF Beaver Competition in 2009 for its interpretations of Austrian baroque music and of which he is a member, he has participated in several early music festivals, such as the Resonanzen Wien , the Bach Festival Leipzig or the Itinéraire Baroque Brantôme participated.

In addition to the “NovAntique Linz” ensemble, he has also worked with other early music ensembles, such as the Progetto Semiserio ensemble and the Harmony of Nations Baroque Orchestra. With this ensemble he performed for the first time all of the surviving movements from Schubert's opera fragment Adrast , which were broadcast on BBC Radio and awarded the “Pasticcio Prize” of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation.

His teaching activities have taken him to the University of Vienna, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and Yale University.
