Mark Gordon (* 14. March 1957 in New York City , New York ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From November 1, 2012 to January 7, 2019, he was the 29th State Treasurer of the State of Wyoming . In the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018 , he was elected to succeed Matt Mead . He took office as governor on January 7, 2019.

Family, education and work

Gordon was born into a farming family in New York City. He attended High School in New Hampshire and College in Vermont . In 1979 he returned to Wyoming on the family farm, but soon went into business for himself. He founded several companies including one active in the tourism industry.

His first wife, Sarah Hildreth Gilmore, met Gordon at college in Vermont and they married in 1981. Sarah died in 1993 in a car accident. This marriage resulted in two children. He met his second wife, Jennie Muir, in 1998 and married her in 2000. Muir brought two children into the marriage. Together they run the Merlin Ranch , where they also live.

Political career

In 2008, Gordon ran in the Republican primary for the seat of Wyoming in the US House of Representatives . Despite known local advocates, he was unable to prevail against Cynthia Lummis .

The governor of Wyoming, Matt Mead, appointed Gordon after the death of Joseph Meyer as the new State Treasurer of Wyoming, comparable to a finance minister of a German state. He was sworn in on November 1, 2012. In 2014 he was elected for a full term as State Treasurer.

In 2016, he rejected speculation that he would run again against Cynthia Lummis in the primary elections for the Wyoming seat in the US House of Representatives. Lummis was no longer running, Liz Cheney was her successor, Gordon remained in office as State Treasurer.

In 2018 he finally announced his candidacy for the office of governor. Incumbent Mead was not allowed to run again due to a term limit. In the primary elections of his party Gordon was able to prevail, in the main election he won in the heavily conservative Wyoming with a clear lead over the Democrat Mary Throne. Gordon received 67.1% of the votes cast, thrones 27.5%. Gordon took office as governor of Wyoming on January 7, 2019. In a US-wide survey held from October 1 to December 31, 2019, it achieved the highest approval rating of all 50 state governors (69% approval, 13% disapproval).
