Martin E. Schwab

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Ernst Schwab (born April 11, 1949 in Basel ) is a Swiss neurobiologist . He is a professor of brain research at the University and the ETH Zurich .

Education and career

Martin E. Schwab studied zoology with botany and chemistry as a minor at the University of Basel , graduated in 1972 and obtained his doctorate in 1973 . As a postdoctoral fellow at the Biozentrum there, he was able to demonstrate a nerve growth factor . In 1978 he received his habilitation . He then worked at Harvard and from 1980 to 1985 at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry , where he demonstrated the existence of nerve growth inhibitors. In 1985 he was appointed to the Institute for Brain Research at the University of Zurich , and since 1997 he has held a double professorship at the Biology Department of ETH Zurich , which has been running a center for neurosciences together with the university there since 1998. In 2001 he became a member of the Leopoldina .

His research focuses on the temporary deactivation of the Nogo protein , which inhibits nerve growth, using antibodies , with the aim of applying it to people with paraplegia . In October 2014, he announced in a statement that phase 2 (proof of efficacy) of a study carried out together with the pharmaceutical company Novartis was being planned.

In 2007, Schwab was proposed by the ETH Zurich election preparation committee as a candidate for the new president. However, he withdrew his candidacy at the last moment. The reason for this was presumably information about a possible “inaccuracy” that had been reported to the ETH Board . Apparently, this was a detail or an erratum that had gained significantly in importance in the context of an ETH-internal power struggle. Parts of the same graphic were accidentally used in two different publications by the same research group. A correction was immediately published in both publications. Schwab's withdrawal was regretted by many within the scientific community. Serious allegations were made against the ETH Board. In 2013 Martin Schwab retired due to age.

Schwab has been married to the artist Ruth Handschin since 1972.
