Martin Gerber (born September 3, 1974 in Burgdorf ) is a former Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper who was under contract in the four most important ice hockey leagues in the world ( National Hockey League , Continental Hockey League , Svenska Hockeyligan and National League A ). The greatest successes of his career include winning the Stanley Cup in 2006 and winning the silver medal at the 2013 World Cup .
Career
Beginnings in Langnau
Gerber grew up in Schangnau and played as a teenager with the SCL Tigers in Langnau . He made his senior debut on October 26, 1991 at the age of 17 with SC Signau, an amateur team in the 2nd division. For the 1993/94 season he moved to SC Thun in the 1st league, the then highest amateur division in Switzerland. For the 1994/95 season he switched to SC Langnau as a substitute goalkeeper, who had previously been promoted from the 1st division to the NLB. In his first season in Langnau he was used a total of 222 minutes and allowed 18 goals against. First he played with his team in the second Swiss league ( National League B ). In the 1997 play-offs he was the first goalkeeper to score a goal in Switzerland (against HC Martigny in the final minute into an empty goal). His first career highlight was on April 7, 1998, when he was promoted to the NLA , the highest Swiss league, with SC Langnau .
National Hockey League
Martin Gerber was selected by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the eighth round at position 232 in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , he was already 26 years old at this time. He did not immediately move to the NHL , but played in the 2001/02 season at Färjestad BK ( Sweden ). There he was a regular goalkeeper and showed very good performances, so that he was awarded as the "best new foreign player" in the top Swedish league. At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he was appointed to the NHL to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, where he was back-up from Jean-Sébastien Giguère . The season was very positive. Gerber played 22 games, had a first-class catch rate and a very good average conceded goal and the team made it to the Stanley Cup final . In the play-offs he only came on the ice twice for a short time. The 2003/04 season completed Gerber again as number 2 and came to a total of 32 games. After the season he was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes in an exchange deal .
In the 2004/05 season he should have made his debut with the Carolina Hurricanes. But after the NHL season had to be canceled due to disputes between players and team owners about payment (a so-called lockout ), he first played for his old club, the SCL Tigers, but moved to Färjestad during the season. In the 2005/06 season , Gerber was a first-choice goalkeeper for the Carolina Hurricanes.
In the NHL he came to 60 games. And his team made it to third place in the regular season. They started the play-offs under these good conditions, but Martin Gerber made a mistake and did not show a good performance in the first games, so that he was replaced by the 22-year-old Cam Ward as number one. In the Eastern Conference final against the Buffalo Sabers Gerber returned to goal and managed a shutout . But he did not manage to prevail against his younger goalkeeper colleague. The Hurricanes moved into the Stanley Cup final against the Edmonton Oilers and won the Stanley Cup for the first time in the seventh and decisive game. After his contract in Carolina he completed the 2006/07 season with the Ottawa Senators . There he shared the working hours with Ray Emery .
The Ottawa Senators won the Prince of Wales Trophy , but lost to the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup final . In the following season Gerber prevailed over Emery and completed most of the season's games. But again a year later he was only a substitute behind Alex Auld and Brian Elliott , so that he was temporarily deported to the farm team in Binghamton . Finally, the Senators placed him in the waiver in January 2009 , after which he was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs in March . But also in Toronto he had strong competition with Vesa Toskala and Curtis Joseph , so that his contract was not renewed at the end of the season. He then decided to move to the KHL, where he was under contract with Atlant Mytishchi from July 2009 . A year later he did not receive a new KHL contract and was initially without a club.
Return to Europe
It was not until August 2010 that he received a two-way contract with the Edmonton Oilers, who used him with the Oklahoma City Barons in the AHL. In the course of the season Gerber came to individual missions with the Oilers in the NHL, in which he was able to convince. In July 2011 Gerber signed a one-year contract with Växjö Lakers Hockey . For the 2012/13 season he was obliged by Rögle BK , who had previously also been promoted to the highest Swedish league level. Gerber could not prevent the direct relegation, however. In April 2013 it was announced that Gerber will play for the first time in Switzerland again in the coming season since the 2004/05 lockout. He signed a two-year contract with Kloten Flyers .
He ended his career after the 2016/17 season.
International
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Gerber and David Aebischer were mainly involved in the good performance of the Swiss. He was also between the posts in the Swiss historic 2-0 win over Canada and shone there with a shutout . At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the silver medal with it. He was also one of the statistically best goalkeepers in the tournament.
Others
- For the first time in the history of the National Hockey League met on October 20, 2002 in the game Mighty Ducks of Anaheim against Colorado Avalanche , Martin Gerber and David Aebischer, two Swiss goalkeepers. The game began with both goalkeepers facing the face-off.
- At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, Martin Gerber used a black helmet. The plan was to replace it with one painted with the new Senators logo. After he had a very successful start to the season with the black one and he classified it as more comfortable, he continued with this one. This earned him the nickname "Darth Gerber" .
- His number 26 was banned from the SCL Tigers . It has not been awarded since the 2004/05 lockout season.
