Martin Gould (born September 14, 1981 in Pinner, London ) is an English snooker player .

Career

Martin Gould was vice European junior champion in 1998 , albeit in the 9-ball discipline . He had his breakthrough in snooker in 2002 when he won the English amateur championship and then qualified first on the Challenge Tour for the subsequent Snooker Main Tour . In his first year as a professional, however, he had so little success that he not only fell out of the rankings immediately, but also put his snooker ambitions on hold for four years. During this time he worked part-time as a croupier in a casino in north London.

In 2007 he returned with full commitment and he was able to pick up where he had celebrated his first great success: He won the English amateur championship again.

After his return to the professional tour, Gould was able to stay in the top 64 and celebrate his greatest success of the season by reaching the finals of the Northern Ireland Trophy . The following year he did the same at the UK Championship and at the Welsh Open he even reached the round of 16 for the first time in a Main Tour event. Qualifying for the finals of the 2009 World Snooker Championship brought him a place in the following season the top 48 in the world rankings .

With victories over Björn Haneveer and Nigel Bond , he qualified for the second time in a row for the Snooker World Cup in 2010 , in which he reached the second round for the first time by defeating world number eight Marco Fu . There he was eliminated with 12:13 against Neil Robertson , although he had already led 11: 5.

In the world rankings he reached cut-off point 2 of the 2010/11 season with 21st place, his highest position to date. At Event 6 of the Players Tour Championship he reached the final, which he lost to Dominic Dale 3: 4. In this newly introduced series of minor ranking tournaments, he also qualified for the final tournament , in which he also advanced to the final. This time he was clearly defeated by Shaun Murphy 4-0. At the World Cup, he met Marco Fu again in the first round and got the upper hand again. His next opponent was Judd Trump , who had his big breakthrough at this tournament and made it to the final after defeating Gould. At the end of the season, Gould claimed No. 21 in the world rankings.

In 2011 Gould won the Power Snooker Masters, which was only introduced last year, with a final victory over last year's winner Ronnie O'Sullivan . At the second event of the Players Tour Championship 2012/13 he secured his first minor ranking tournament title with a 4-3 final win over Stephen Maguire .

In January 2013 he won the snooker shoot-out in Blackpool by winning the final over Northern Irishman Mark Allen . A few weeks later he won his next invitation tournament, the Championship League , when he defeated Allister Carter 3-2 in the final of the Winners Group .

The 2013/14 season was not so successful, he did not get beyond the second round at any tournament. Only in the Championship League did he reach the final for the second time in a row, but this time he was defeated by Judd Trump . At times he fell out of the top 32 in the world rankings, but was able to improve to 30th place at the end of the season.

The following season Gould started successfully by reaching the semi-finals at the Wuxi Classic . Then he reached at least round 2 in all ranking tournaments in which he competed. At the beginning of October 2014 he reached the final of the Bulgarian Open , but lost to Shaun Murphy 2: 4. At the newly introduced World Grand Prix he reached the semifinals in March 2015, where he was again defeated by Judd Trump. However, there were no world ranking points and some cancellations as well as the surprising end in the first qualifying round for the world championship against Adam Duffy prevented him from advancing in the world rankings. He finished the season in 26th place.

Also in summer 2015 the Englishman successfully started a new season . At the start of the Australian Goldfields Open , he defeated the world number eight Marco Fu and then made it into the final of a world numbering tournament for the second time in his career after the PTC final in 2011. In a balanced final he was able to keep the game open until the end and was only defeated 8: 9 by the four-time world champion John Higgins in the decision-making frame.

In February 2016 he reached the final of the German Masters and defeated the Belgian Luca Brecel 9: 5. With that he won his first world rankings title. In the same month he also reached the final of the minor ranking tournament in Gdynia , but lost there against world number one Mark Selby .
