Martin Reifferscheid

Martin Reifferscheid (born June 24, 1917 in Berlin ; † July 4, 1993 in Munich ) was a German specialist in surgery and full professor at the University Hospital Aachen .

Reifferscheid was the son of the painter Heinrich Reifferscheid and his wife Margarethe von Neufforge (1887–1965) and the grandson of the philologist August Reifferscheid . The gynecologist Karl Reifferscheid and the art historian Heinrich Reifferscheid were his uncles, the Germanist Alexander Reifferscheid his great-uncle.

After finishing school, Martin Reifferscheid studied at the University of Bonn , among other places , where he wrote his dissertation in 1941 and received his license to practice medicine . In 1952 he also completed his habilitation in Bonn and was initially taken on as a lecturer and from 1958 as an adjunct professor.

On March 1, 1966, Reifferscheid received a call to the Aachen University Hospital, which had emerged from the Aachen City Hospital. There he took over the office of medical director of the surgical clinic and, as a full professor, the chair of surgery. On August 1, 1982 Reifferscheid retired and died on July 4, 1993 in Munich.

Martin Reifferscheid was considered a specialist in liver , colon and rectal surgery and in particular in the surgical treatment of cancer in the intestinal canal. To this end, he wrote several papers and specialist books, including his major work “Surgery”, which is now in its eighth edition.

Reifferscheid was a member of the German Society for Surgery and was elected President in 1978 and made an honorary member in 1993.
