Matthias Rothmund (born April 15, 1942 in Darmstadt ) is a German surgeon and university professor who has earned a great national and international reputation as a researcher and doctor.

Life

Rothmund studied human medicine from 1963 to 1968 in Mainz and Innsbruck . He passed his state examination in 1968, received his doctorate two years later and worked from then on at the Mainz University Surgical Clinic. He obtained the title of specialist in surgery in 1975, only one year later followed by his habilitation . In 1978 he became a senior physician, and in 1979 he was appointed as a civil servant for life.

From 1987 to 2008 he took over the management of the Clinic for Visceral , Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the Philipps University of Marburg as a C4 professor . In 2008 the physician retired from the University of Marburg , but took over responsibility as the full-time dean of the medical department until the end of 2010 .

Rothmund was a member and often board member or president in five German and four international scientific surgical specialist societies. In the interdisciplinary German Society for Surgery, for example, he was a member of the executive committee from 1996–2011 and president in 2004/2005.

From 1994 to 1998 Rothmund was a reviewer for the DFG . From 2000 to 2007 he was a member of the Medical Committee of the Science Council . From 2002 to 2008 he was a member of the International Relations Committee of the American College of Surgeons. For three years (2005–2008) he took on voluntary responsibility as a board member of the “Patient Safety Action Alliance”.

From 1987 to 2008 he was the editor of the German Medical Weekly , which appears in Stuttgart , and from 1990 to 2010 he was the editor of the specialist journal “Der Chirurg” from Heidelberg; also from 1991 to 2007 that of the Heidelberg journal Langenbeck's Archive for Surgery . From 1991 to 2001 Rothmund was on the advisory board of the New York World Journal of Surgery . He worked for the renowned British Journal of Surgery from 1994–2008, including 2004–2008 as editor-in-chief and “Vice Chairman”.
