Nakayama made his professional debut for Júbilo Iwata on March 11, 1994 and then played there until 2009. Particularly noteworthy is the 1998 season, when Nakayama was the top scorer with 36 goals scored. He managed the feat of being able to achieve a hat trick in four consecutive games. This achievement even earned him an entry in the Guinness Book of Records . He was able to celebrate the championship three times with his team, and twice he was the top scorer. His average hit rate was consistently one goal in two games.

In 2010, at the age of 42, he moved to Consadole Sapporo , but was often only used symbolically and did not score a goal. After a unanimous use in a league game against the Yokohama F. Marinos , dated November 24, 2012, he initially ended his career due to problems with his knees.

In mid-September 2015, Nakayama began to train with fourth division club Azul Claro Numazu and, now 47, signed his contract a little later.
