Mascarenhas ( Mascarinhas ) is an East Timorese Suco in the administrative office of Vera Cruz ( municipality of Dili ) and district of the state capital Dili .

In Mascarenhas there are 5828 inhabitants (2015), of which 3060 are men and 2768 women. The population density is 8327.6 inhabitants / km². There are 897 households in the Suco. Almost 96% of the population name Tetum Prasa as their mother tongue. Minorities speak Tetum Terik , Baikeno , Mambai , Lakalei or Makasae .

Before the 2015 regional reform, Mascarenhas had an area of ​​1.26 km². Now it is 0.70 km². The Suco is in the north of the Vera Cruz administrative office. To the north is the Suco Caicoli , west of the Suco Vila Verde and south of the Suco Lahane Ocidental . To the east, Mascarenhas borders the administrative office of Nain Feto with its Sucos Santa Cruz and Lahane Oriental .

The northern part of urban Sucos is more densely populated than the south, which still has open spaces and is already significantly higher with hills. In the north lies the district of Bispo Medeiros (named after António Joaquim de Medeiros ) and in the northeast Mascarenha . South of Bispo Medeiros, from Av. Mouzinho de Albuquerque , the Suco runs through the Balide district , which extends into the neighboring Sucos. The Suco has a primary school ( Escola Kristal Balide ), the Convento das Madres Canussianas , the Ensino Secundário Cristal secondary school and another secondary school, the Escola Secundária nº4 de Balide . The national women's rights organization Alola Foundation is headquartered in Mascarenhas. The former Comarca prison in Balide houses a museum.

In Suco are the six Aldeias Aldeia 03 , Alto Balide , Alto PM ( Bispo Medeiros ?), Baixo Balide , Baixo PM and Manu Cocorec .

In September 1999, the Chefe de Suco Guido Ximenes Goviea was assassinated in East Timor during the unrest over the independence referendum . The alleged killers Aje Pareira and Beni Ludji , members of Aitarak , a pro-Indonesian militia , were arrested on the East Timor border in April 2003.

During the 2006 riots , Canossians ran a refugee camp in Balide.

In the 2004/2005 elections , Rui Ilidio de Araujo was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections , Mateus de Jesus Valente won .
