Mason County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Point Pleasant .

The county is located in western West Virginia, bordering Ohio , the border being formed by the Ohio River , and has an area of 1,152 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Gallia County, Ohio, Meigs County, Ohio, Jackson County , Putnam County, and Cabell County .

history

Mason County was formed on January 2, 1804 from parts of Kanawha County. It was named after George Mason , an authoritative author of the constitution of his home state Virginia , in particular the Virginia Declaration of Rights and a member of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Mason County had 25,957 people in 10,587 households and 7,569 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.37 percent white, 0.50 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.47 percent of the population.

Of the 10,587 households, 30.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, 28.5 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent were single households, and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.1 men.

The median income for a household in the 27,134 USD , and the median income for a family was 32,953 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,382 versus $ 17,074 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,804. 16.6 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
