Massimo Introvigne

Massimo Introvigne (born June 14, 1955 in Rome ) is Italian sociologist and lawyer , professor of religious sociology at the Pontifical University of Salesians , former professor of religion at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum , founding director of the Center for Studies on New Religions ( CESNUR ), executive secretary of Piedmontese Society for the Sociology of Religion, former representative of the OSCE Chairman on Combating Racism, Xenophobia and Discrimination against Christians and representatives of other religions. Since 2012 he has been chairman of the Religious Freedom Committee set up by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . He acted as a consultant for new religious movements for governments, law enforcement agencies and churches in several European countries.

He has authored about 60 books in Italian and more than 100 articles in academic journals on topics such as new religious movements, religious pluralism in modern society, and modern Western esotericism . Some of Introvigne's books have been translated and published in English, German, French, Spanish and other languages. He is co-author of the award-winning Enciclopedia delle Religioni in Italia (Encyclopedia of Religions in Italy); he is a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal Interdisciplinary Journal of Religions (published by Baylor University ) and a former member of the editorial board of Nova Religio .

biography

In 1975 Introvigne graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University with a bachelor's degree ( Laurea ) in philosophy. In 1979 he received his doctorate from the University of Turin . His dissertation on the philosophy of law These two beginnings in Rawls' theory of justice (I due principi di giustizia nella teoria di Rawls) was published in the form of a separate monograph in Milan by the economic-legal publisher Giuffrè Editore. From 1979 to 1985 he taught at the Law Institute of the University of Turin. Introvigne has taught sociology and the history of religious movements in the theological faculties of the Pontifical University of Santa Croce and the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum , and sociology at the Università Europea di Roma .

In addition to his native Italian, he speaks English, Spanish and French.

Scientific career

M. Introvigne is the author of around 60 books in Italian and more than 100 articles in scientific journals. Some of Introvigne's books have been translated and published in English, German, French, Spanish and other languages. Introvigne is the co-author of the scientific dictionary reference work "Encyclopedia of Religions of Italy" ( Enciclopedia delle Religioni in Italia ), which was published in 2001 by Elledici publishing house. In 2006 the 2nd edition with changes and additions was published and the third edition was published in 2013. Introvigne is or has been a member of the editorial boards of such academic journals as Nova Religio and the Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion , published by Baylor University .

Massimo Introvigne made a significant contribution to the study of modern Western esotericism .

Introvigne was co-authored by the American sociologist James T. Richardson , the Italian sociologist PierLuigi Zoccatelli , the Argentine sociologists Veronica Roldan and Nelly Ippolito Macrina . Together with the American sociologist of religion Rodney Stark , chairman of the Society for the Study of Religion (USA), he wrote a monograph, “God has come back” ( Italian “Dio è tornato” ).

Center for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR)

In 1988 Massimo Introvigne founded the “Center for Studies on New Religions” (CESNUR) together with an international team of religious scholars and religious sociologists . The center operates in Turin with the support of the Roman Catholic Church and is mainly concerned with researching new religious movements. The center annually organizes large international scientific and practical conferences in which many scientists participate. The center has a large library which contains a rich collection of books by M. Introvigne on new religious movements.

Center for the Study of Popular Culture (CESPOC)

Another theme of Massimo Introvigne's work was pop culture , where he curated several exhibitions on vampire mythology and the image of Dracula in culture. Introvigne also published reviews of cultural events in the Avvenire , Il Domenicale , Il Giornale , Il Foglio , Libero and La Stampa newspapers . In 2005 he co-founded the Center for the Study of Popular Culture ( Italian Centro Studi sulla Popular Culture ) (CESPOC).

In 2006 Introvigne was the curator of a virtual exhibition on the phenomena of a popular culture entitled "From Beati Paoli to the Da Vinci Code : the myth of a plot in a soap opera" ( Italian Dai Beati Paoli al Codice da Vinci: mito del complotto nel feuilleton ).

Transylvanian Society of Dracula

In 1995, Introvigne founded the Italian division of the Transylvanian Society of Dracula , the historical and cultural association that brings together people interested in exploring vampire folklore, and especially legends about Dracula.

Legal activity

Massimo Introvigne also provides legal advice to international companies. He has been a partner in the law firm Jacobacci & Partners since 1983. His specialties are intellectual property, in particular trademark protection and haute couture . From 1980-1995, Introvigne served as a legal advisor on intellectual property issues. He was an expert on more than 150 intellectual property cases. He is co-author of two monographs and author of several scientific articles on intellectual law.

He is one of the international arbitrators for the World Intellectual Property Organization .

Social activity

In 2011, Massimo Introvigne was the representative of the chairman of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Commission on Combating Racism, Xenophobia and Discrimination.

Since 1971 he was a member of the Catholic Alliance, which dealt with the study and dissemination of Catholic teaching in the world. In 2008 he became Vice Chairman of the Alliance, but on April 23, 2016, he resigned from this position “for personal and professional reasons” and ended his membership in this organization.

In May 2018, Massimo Introvigne published the online magazine Bitter Winter as editor-in-chief , which appears daily in eight languages. Bitter Winter publishes news, documents, and testimony of religious persecution in China. The articles come from a network of several hundred correspondents spread across all Chinese provinces.
