MasterChef is a cooking show television format. It was initially developed by Franc Roddam for British television, where it premiered in 1990. Since then it has been sold to countries on every continent. The Endemol Shine Group holds the rights .

concept

The basic idea of the format is a competition among amateur cooks, who in each case prepare individual dishes or multi-course menus within a certain period of time, observed by the cameras. Your performance will then be assessed by an expert jury. Based on their evaluations, individual candidates advance to the next round or drop out of the competition. The winner of the final will be awarded the title “MasterChef”.

The exact design of the competition has changed considerably over the years. The international versions of MasterChef also differ considerably in terms of process and regulations, but often use the same set pieces, for example certain competition modes.

history

The first episode of MasterChef was broadcast by the BBC on July 2, 1990 on BBC One . The show ran there initially in eleven seasons until July 3, 2001. In 2005, it was added to the BBC Two program in a modified form and has been produced continuously since then.

An Australian version followed in 2009. MasterChef Australia was the most watched show on Australian television in 2009.

As a result, more than 60 local MasterChef versions were created worldwide , which are or have been shown in the respective television programs with varying degrees of success. In addition, there are sometimes different spin-offs in the various regions , in which, for example, celebrities, professional chefs or young people compete against each other.

The term "Master Chef"

“Master Chef” means, translated into German, “Master Chef” or “ Kitchen Master ”. In gastronomy in the English-speaking world, however, “Master Chef” does not mean the owner of a master craftsman's certificate , but rather the person who is at the head of a kitchen brigade , for example a chef or a chef de cuisine.
