September 1987 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a German boxing athlete of Armenian descent.
She became world flyweight champion in 2007 . From October 2009 to May 2012 she was three-time world champion in flyweight - according to the version of the World Boxing Association (WBA), the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the Women's International Boxing Federation (WIBF). With up to 400 beats per minute, Kentikian is the fastest female boxer in the world.
Life
Susianna Kentikian left Armenia with her parents and brother at the age of five because her father was threatened with military service in Nagorno-Karabakh , which was contested at the time . The family first moved to a dormitory in Berlin , but because of the violence there and lack of knowledge of German, they went to Moldova and later to Russia , where Kentikian briefly attended school. In 1996 the family returned to Germany and moved to Hamburg . Kentikian first lived on the Bibby Altona , a residential ship for asylum seekers , and then lived with parents and brother in an asylum seekers' home . Her residence status remained uncertain for a long time; Only her professional contract for three years secured her and her family a permanent right of residence in 2005 .
In addition to attending school, Kentikian began working in a gym as a cleaner at the age of 16 to support her family financially. In summer 2006 she made at a vocational school for nutrition and home economics to high-school diploma and was awarded in June 2008, the German citizenship . She applied for dual citizenship in order to keep her Armenian citizenship. Kentikian now lives with her family in an apartment near their boxing stable in Hamburg.
Amateur career
Kentikian discovered her passion for boxing at the age of twelve after accompanying her brother to training. She started with regular training herself and explained that boxing gave her the opportunity to forget private difficulties for a short time: “I was able to let everything out, all of the energy. When you have as many problems as we do, you need something like that. "
Between 2001 and 2004 Kentikian was Hamburg Junior Champion. As an amateur, she was also the North German Junior Champion in the regional association in 2003 and 2004. In October 2004 she won her most important title among amateurs, the German Junior Championship. With growing success it became increasingly difficult for Kentikian to find opponents in the amateur field. Her status as a tolerated asylum seeker forbade her to box outside of Hamburg, which made her situation more difficult. During their amateur days, Kentikian had a record of 24 wins in one loss. She later explained this with her excessive zeal, as she had taken on that fight despite health problems. Her aggressive fighting style with quick combinations and her endeavor to attack the opponent to the point of knockout , earned her the name "Killer Queen"; the song of the same name by the rock band Queen , Killer Queen , was often used as invasion music.
Professional career
During an exhibition match as part of the World Cup elimination for the amateurs, Kentikian was discovered for the professionals. At the beginning of 2005, she signed a three-year contract with a three-year option with the Hamburg boxing stable Spotlight Boxing , a sister company of Universum Box-Promotion . Since then she has been looked after by the universe trainer Magomed Schaburow . Kentikian began her professional career on January 15, 2005 with a unanimous victory on points over the Bulgarian Iliana Boneva in the preliminary program of a world championship fight by Regina Halmich . In the following 14 months, Kentikian won eleven further build-up fights, nine of them prematurely, and made a very high knockout for women's boxing - especially in the lower weight classes. -Quote attracts attention. On July 25, 2006 Kentikian defeated Daniela Graf unanimously on points and won her first professional title, the International German Flyweight Championship . In her first international title fight on September 9, 2006, she won the WIBF InterContinental flyweight championship; she defeated the American Maribel Zurita after a technical knockout in the fourth round after Zurita was taken out of the fight because of a laceration on the left eyebrow.
2007
On February 16, 2007 Kentikian played her first world championship in Cologne after winning 14 professional fights. She defeated Carolina Alvarez from Venezuela by technical knockout in the ninth round and thus won the vacant flyweight world championship of the WBA association . The fight, which also made her first appearance as the main fighter and was broadcast live for the first time by ProSieben , developed clearly in favor of Kentikian after an initially balanced first round, and the referee broke the fight because of too great a superiority to protect the heavily marked Alvarez Round nine off. Six weeks later, on March 30, 2007, Kentikian fought in her first title defense in the framework of the exhibition match between Regina Halmich and Stefan Raab in front of 19,500 spectators in the Kölnarena . She won against María José Núñez from Uruguay by technical knockout in the third round. Kentikian sent her clearly inferior opponent to the ground in round two and the referee ended the fight a round later when Núñez was only kept on his feet by the ring ropes after several heavy hits.
In her next title fight, she faced the French Nadia Hokmi on May 25, 2007 in Cologne . The opponent turned out to be the first tough test in Kentikian's professional career and Hokmi managed to make the battle extremely even. After a weaker start, the French woman was able to win rounds in the second half of the fight with the help of her significant size and range advantage, and Kentikian won for the first time only as a result of a shared 2: 1 point decision. The fight was voted one of the five “Top Fights” of the year by the women's boxing site Womenboxing.com . On September 7th, 2007 she defended her title in the Burg-Wächter Castello in Düsseldorf against the British Shanee Martin and defeated her with a technical knockout in the third round. Kentikian clearly dominated Martin from the start and the referee stopped the fight after a knockdown in round three.
After the long-time WIBF World Champion Regina Halmich had ended her career a week earlier, Kentikian combined her WBA World Championship title with the WIBF title that was vacant after Halmich's resignation on December 7, 2007 in her hometown of Hamburg . Kentikian met Nadia Hokmi again in a rematch. The French turned out to be a tough opponent, just like six months earlier, and the fight was similar to their first encounter. Again Kentikian was able to win the first rounds, while Hokmi got better with increasing duration and overall an even fight emerged. This time the judges saw Kentikian unanimously as the winner.
2008
With a victory after a technical knockout in the third round against Sarah Goodson from the Philippines , she defended her status as double world champion on February 29, 2008 in Hamburg. Goodson, who previously competed almost exclusively in the lower weight classes, proved to have no chance from the start and was taken out of the fight by the referee in the third round. In her next title defense on May 10, 2008 in Halle , Kentikian defeated the American Mary Ortega by technical knockout in the first round. Ortega went to the ground twice on the right and when Kentikian had put her opponent on the ring ropes again, the referee broke off the fight shortly before the end of the first round. The quick end came as a surprise, as Ortega was considered a strong boxer in the run-up and was able to convince, among other things, against the then WIBA world champion Elena Reid despite a point defeat.
Kentikian defended her two world championship titles again on August 29, 2008 against the Israeli Hagar Finer, the last opponent of Regina Halmich when she left. The fight in the Düsseldorf Burg-Wächter Castello developed after a balanced first round initially in favor of Finer, who showed the clearer actions during the first half of the fight. From round five Kentikian got better and landed the clearer hits. They ultimately won the sometimes unclean battle unanimously on points. In their subsequent title fight Kentikian met on December 5, 2008 in Halle on the reigning Russian GBU world champion Anastasia Toktaulova, whose title was not at stake. Kentikian managed to control her opponent over long stretches of the tactical fight from the middle of the ring and achieved a unanimous victory on points. In December 2008 she was named Germany's Boxer of the Year for the first time by the trade magazine BoxSport.
2009
On March 20, 2009 Kentikian defended her world title against the American Elena Reid unanimously on points in Hamburg . The American, who caused a stir after two controversial skirmishes with Regina Halmich in Germany in 2004 and 2005 and who had not only boxed but also fought two mixed martial arts fights, remained unusually passive from the start and was clearly controlled by Kentikian. In the end, Reid did not win a round on the official score sheets.
After ProSieben and Spotlight Boxing had ended their collaboration two months earlier, Kentikian's second fight of the year was broadcast on ZDF for the first time on July 4, 2009 . She successfully defended her title in the Hamburg Color Line Arena against the Argentinean Carolina Gutierrez Gaite, the WBA interim world champion in super flyweight . Kentikian clearly dominated her opponent for the entire duration of the fight and achieved a unanimous point judgment, in which she decided every round for herself.
2010
On April 24, 2010 Kentikian boxed in Hamburg against Nadia Raoui (D), who had been unbeaten in 12 fights, for the titles of the associations WIBF, WBA and WBO and won by a controversial decision on points (96-95.94-96.94-96 ). After the announcement of the winner, the UBPboxing moderator expressed his skepticism towards the judge's judgment with the statement “This defeat will be hard to swallow”. Junge Medien Hamburg writes about the course of the fight: “After a full ten rounds, the judges decide 2: 1 for 'Killer Queen' Susi Kentikian. Was that fair Boxing experts were quite divided and there were even a few whistles from the Hamburg audience. "
Thanks to a technical tie, Kentikian successfully defended her flyweight title against Arely Mucino on July 17, 2010. The fight had to be stopped in the third round after 24 seconds. A headbutt by the Mexican caused a laceration in Kentikian, the bleeding of which could not be stopped by the ring doctor.
2011
In March 2011 Kentikian moved to the SES boxing stable of manager Ulf Steinforth in Magdeburg. Universum had already separated from the TV partner ZDF in the previous year. This made it impossible for Kentikian to contest further fights with media coverage. For a short time, she already completed a fight against the Mexican Ana Arrazola on March 26, 2011 in the gym of her former employer Universum in Hamburg. The fight was broadcast live on the internet by Bild.de. Kentikian was able to successfully defend her WIBF title over 10 rounds again with a unanimous point evaluation.
2012
In March 2012 Kentikian boxed 10 rounds against the American Melissa McMorrow . By losing on points, Kentikian lost their three championship titles (WBA, WBO and WIBF).
On December 1, 2012 Kentikian lost in Düsseldorf against the American Carina Moreno controversially on points. Thus Moreno became the new world champion of the vacant WBA flyweight world champion title .
2013
On February 1, 2013 Kentikian boxed against Sanae Jah in Düsseldorf and won the interim WBA world title. On June 7, 2013 Kentikian defeated Carina Moreno and on December 7, 2013 Simona Galassi , thereby defending each of the WBA interim female flyweight titles.
2014
On May 31, 2014 Kentikian defeated Dan-Bi Kim with TKO and defended the WBA interim female flyweight title. On November 8, 2014, Kentikian defeated Naoko Fujioka and again defended her title.
2015
After an almost one-year break, Kentikian defeated Susana Cruz Perez on points on October 2, 2015 and again defended the WBA interim female flyweight title and won the WIBF World Championship at the same time.
2016
On July 30, 2016, Kentikian met Croatian Nevenka Mikulić in her voluntary title defense . She won the fight over ten rounds unanimously on points and remained world champion.
Media presence
At the beginning of her professional career, reports about Kentikian appeared mainly in the local Hamburg press and in various German print media. Her difficult life story was of particular interest to the press, which made comparisons with the boxing film Million Dollar Baby . In addition, she was often described in the media as “Germany's smallest professional boxer” due to her small body size. Right from the start of her professional career, she was considered one of the great talents in the German boxing scene, and the press treated her as the potential successor to record world champion Regina Halmich - a goal that she also set for herself.
In 2007 she became known to a larger audience through the cooperation between ProSieben and Spotlight Boxing . In addition to broadcasting her boxing matches live as part of the “ProSieben Fight Night”, she also appeared several times on the TV total entertainment program and sparring over four rounds with Stefan Raab before his rematch against Halmich . In March 2007 she took part in the 5th Wok World Championship in Innsbruck , where she won the four-wok competition together with Sven Hannawald , Christina Surer and Markus Beyer . Her first title defense against the Uruguayan boxer María José Núnez as part of the exhibition match between Halmich and Raab, her most watched fight to date, was watched by 4.69 million viewers.
In addition, a television team from WDR visited Kentikian and her family over a period of one year; the documentary describes her athletic and personal career and was broadcast in June 2007 on Das Erste . Kentikian was involved in the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008 as an ambassador in Germany to inform people about the advantages of diversity and to inspire them for an intercultural exchange. In addition, she was the face of "5 makes fit!", An initiative of the German company health insurance fund for five minutes of exercise a day. In 2009 she was a guest on Big Brother as part of a challenge.
Since 2010 she has been the patron of the “Tree of Life for Armenia” initiative. The non-profit foundation has set itself the goal of creating a permanent livelihood for up to 200 Armenian families by setting up walnut plantations, supporting disabled children and promoting social institutions. As a showcase project for Armenian and German partnerships, “Tree of Life for Armenia” should not only offer “help for self-help”, but also provide impetus for more entrepreneurial engagement. In 2011 she was in a supporting role in Klaus Wirbitzky's film The Sky Has Four Corners . She played a boxer of Kazakh origin at the beginning of her professional career. In 2010 she made a guest appearance in the music video Weg einer Krieger by the hip-hop group Berlins Most Wanted . In 2017 she took part in the tenth season of the dance show Let's Dance . In 2019 she appeared in The Masked Singer as "Monster" and took fourth place. In 2020 she will be one of the prominent candidates for the MasterChef Celebrity cooking show on Sky One .
