Matthias Bertsch (* 1966 in Lichtenau ) is a German musicologist , musician and associate professor at the Institute for Music and Movement Education / Rhythm and Music Physiology at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna .

Life

He completed his school education in Lichtenau, Bühl and at the home school Lender (Abitur 1986). Because there was no advanced music course at the Bühler Windeck-Gymnasium, he switched to the Lender home school. After graduating from high school, Bertsch moved to Vienna and studied musicology at the University of Vienna from 1988 to 1992 . He graduated with a master's and a Ph.D. in 1999 "summa cum laude" with his work to tone on the trumpet in the fields of " Musical Acoustics " and " Music Physiology " the doctor at the University of Vienna. In 2003 he completed his habilitation with work on musical acoustics and studies on the Viennese sound style , received the license to teach (venia docendi) for the subject of musical acoustics and became deputy head of the institute for musical acoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

In 2008 Bertsch moved as associate. University professor in the field of music physiology at the Institute for Music and Movement Education / Rhythmics and Music Physiology, completed training as a biofeedback trainer and has been elected President of the Austrian Society for Music and Medicine (musicians' medicine, music physiology, music psychology) since 2009 .

In addition to his academic career, he began musical training as a trumpeter. He completed private studies with Manfred Stoppacher and took master classes with Fred Mills and Thomas Gansch, among others .

Scientific activity

Matthias Bertsch's main research areas are " acoustic , physiological and psychological aspects of making music", the Viennese sound style and instrument science . He has written scientific articles in TV programs on ORF (Modern Times, Newton, Kulturmontag, ...), German broadcasters (ARD, WDR, SWR) as well as in print and online media (Standard, Die Zeit, Profil, Youtube). As a speaker, chairman and committee member he appeared at international specialist congresses and symposia. He is also the author of publications in national and international journals, encyclopedias and books. It is of particular concern to him to integrate the subject of musician's health into professional musical training and thus to counteract musician's illnesses in the long term.

Bertsch is a member of: International Trumpet Guild (ITG); Austrian Society for Music and Medicine (ÖGfMM); German Society for Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine (DGfMM); Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA); German Society for Music Psychology (DGM); Society of Interdisciplinary Musicology (SIM). He is also a board member of the University Teachers Association (ULV),

Artistic activity

As a trumpeter he has worked in the Vienna Academic Philharmonic, the Uni-Big-Band Vienna and the brass quintets Brasso Continuo. As part of his orchestral work in the staff music corps of the Bundeswehr , he played at state receptions in the FRG in 1987. He is currently Vice-Chairman and musician of B4, the Babenberg big band Mödling .
