Matthias Steier (born January 6, 1959 in Leipzig ) is a German painter , graphic artist and draftsman .

Life

Matthias Steier was born in Leipzig in 1959 . After graduating from high school, he completed an apprenticeship as a repro technician (helio operator) from 1975 and worked in this profession until 1978. This was followed from 1978 to 1983 by studying at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (HGB) in Leipzig. He received his special training from Wolfgang Peuker , Dietrich Burger and Arno Rink . In 1983 he graduated as a painter. Immediately thereafter, until the end of 1985, he worked as a fee-based employee in the creation of Werner Tübke's monumental peasant war panorama in Bad Frankenhausen , which was completed on October 16, 1987 by signature with the name Werner Tübke .

Tübke, Peuker and Rink are well-known representatives of the Leipzig School , and Steier is their successor as their academic student and as a two-year employee at the main Tübke plant.

As a figurative-representational painter, Steier moves in his imagery in the context of contradictions between appearance and being, reality and illusion. Stylistically, his pictures occupy a position between magical realism and surrealism . The influences on his works are manifold, come from literature and travel impressions in Mediterranean and South American regions. Steier's landscapes are filled with oversized apples, matadors, bulls and dancers - symbols of the eternal struggle of humans with wild nature, the battle of the sexes.

Matthias Steier has been working as a freelance artist in Eisenhüttenstadt since 1987 . In 1994 he was a city painter in Waltrop / North Rhine-Westphalia . Steier went on study trips to Italy , Spain , Chile and Argentina , which are reflected in many ways in his works. In addition, he has been teaching various courses on the basics of visual design through to oil painting at the Volkshochschule Eisenhüttenstadt for years. Steier maintains contacts with artist colleagues such as the painters Sandra Rienäcker , Sabine Naumann and the metal sculptor Eckard Herrmann . Matthias Steier works and lives in Eisenhüttenstadt.
