1200 residents of the village of Mau-Nuno fled the pro-Indonesian militia into the woods on August 11, 1999, fearing for their lives . Others formed small groups to defend themselves. On September 23, 1999, the remaining residents of the village were also evicted by the Mahidi militia .

In 2003, among other things, this case was heard in court. Several defendants were sentenced to prison terms in absentia. They had fled to West Timor , Indonesia .
