Maurizio Giammarco

Maurizio Giammarco (* 7. October 1952 in Pavia ) is an Italian jazz - saxophonist , composer and arranger.

Giammarco grew up in Rome and learned the saxophone at the age of 14. He began his career around 1970 when he worked with musicians from the Italian jazz scene such as Giorgio Gaslini , Giancarlo Schiaffini , Enrico Pieranunzi , Aldo Romano and Mario Schiano . In 1976 he founded his first own formation, worked in the following years a. a. with Umberto Fiorentino , Enzo Pietropaoli and Furio Di Castri , Danilo Rea , Stefano Sabatini and Roberto Gatto as well as with Chet Baker and Phil Woods ( Phil on Etna and Embraceable You ), who were then working in Italy .

In the 1980s Giammarco also worked as an accompanist with pop artists such as Mina , Mia Martini , Fiorella Mannoia , Riccardo Cocciante , Antonello Venditti and Francesco De Gregori . He later became director of the Megatones ensemble and played in the Trio Tricycles with John Arnold and Dario Deidda . Giammarco also became director of the Parco della Musica Jazz Orchestra , a jazz band that performed in the auditorium of Rome. In the course of his career, Giammarco has worked with many Italian and international musicians such as Billy Cobham , Peter Erskine , Lester Bowie , Enrico Pieranunzi , Dave Liebman , Paolo Fresu , Enrico Rava , Gavino Murgia , Giovanni Tommaso , Miroslav Vitouš , Aldo Romano , Steve Lacy , Danny Gottlieb , Tom Harrel , Kenny Wheeler and Marc Johnson . Giammaroco is currently the director of the Termoli Jazz Podium Festival .
