Carl Friedrich August Maximilian Freiherr Dathe von Burgk (born June 23, 1853 in Roßthal ; † November 8, 1931 in Schönfeld ) was a German coal and steel entrepreneur and politician.

Live and act

In 1882, on the occasion of his wedding, Dathe von Burgk received the Schönfeld castle and manor near Großenhain as a wedding gift from his father Arthur Dathe von Burgk , the wealthy owner of the Baron von Burgker coal and iron works . From 1882 to 1884 he had the palace expanded and rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style under the direction of the architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel . From 1889 to 1893 he had the palace park laid out as an English landscape garden.

After his father's death, he took over in 1897 the vast property, which apart from hard coal and iron and steel enterprises also manor Burgk that Freigut Kohldorf , the manor Pesterwitz , the manor Roßthal and Jochhöhschlösschen were near Pesterwitz. He was one of the richest Saxons of his time.

Under his leadership, however, due to the limited range of deposits, coal production declined more and more despite intensive exploration at the beginning of the 20th century. The production in the Segen-Gottes-Schacht was stopped in 1916. After the First World War , coal was only mined in the Glückauf- and Marienschacht under steadily deteriorating conditions. In 1919, the Burgker Werke had to join the Sächsische Steinkohlensyndikat mbH Zwickau , which was founded in the same year under pressure from the state . From 1929, the shaft safety pillars in the two remaining shafts were dismantled. But even this could no longer prevent the discontinuation of unprofitable mining. The last coal mine was mined on the Marienschacht on April 11, 1930 and on the Glückauf-Schacht on April 14, 1930. The factory was officially closed on March 31, 1930. In order to ensure the continued existence of the company, the briquette factory remained in operation on the site of the Glückauf shaft . She worked with clear coals from the Royal Saxon Coal Works in Zauckerode, which were delivered via the Windbergbahn. Furthermore, a coal mine was operated to sell the coal. On July 1, 1931, the company, now trading under the name Burgker Werke , left the coal syndicate. A few months later, Dathe von Burgk died. The company was not finally closed until 1946.

From 1898 Dathe von Burgk was the Royal Saxon Chamberlain . Like his father, he was a member of the first chamber of the Saxon state parliament . From 1907 until the abolition of the constitutional monarchy in Saxony in 1918, he was a member of parliament by royal appointment.
