Mechthild II of Anhalt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mechthild II. Von Anhalt (* 1392 , † 1463 in Gernrode ) from the Askanians was either from 1445 or from 1451 to 1463 the abbess of the free secular monastery of Gernrode and Frose .

Life

Mechthild II of Anhalt was the daughter of Prince Sigismund I of Anhalt-Dessau and Jutta von Querfurt . She is the aunt of Abbess Scholastica von Anhalt, who ruled from 1469 to 1504, and succeeded Agnes Schenk von Landsberg .

Mechthild II spent her youth in Zerbst . She later entered the monastery as a canoness . The appointment as provost will probably take place in 1439. The beginning of her term of office cannot be precisely determined, since the last known document of her predecessor is dated February 27, 1445, the first document of Mechthild II was not until April 4 1451. The beginning of her term of office cannot be precisely determined due to the sparse source material.

Term of office

Due to the lack of sources, hardly any statements can be made about her term of office, as she is only mentioned in a few documents. The oldest is dated April 4, 1451 and testifies that Princess Hedwig zu Anhalt enfeoffed her with the Plötzkau Castle and the tithe in Frose in full ownership.

Construction activity

In 1460 the roofs of the monastery buildings were re-covered with lead ( "restauratio Abbatiae" ). The remains of the lead roofing were discovered during the restoration of the collegiate church by Ferdinand von Quast .
