Mechtild Schröder

Mechtild Schröder (also sometimes written Mechthild Schröder ; * March 8, 1932 in Kassel ; † January 14, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German doctor and Baptist deaconess . For more than 16 years she headed the Evangelical-Free Church Diakoniegemeinschaft Bethel (Berlin) as superior . For twelve years she was a member of the federal government , the highest governing body of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches in Germany .

Life

After graduating from high school, Mechtild Schröder studied at the Medical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and received her doctorate there in 1962 with a thesis on high elasticity . Following her studies, she completed her specialist training as an anesthetist in Berlin . During this time she made contact with the Evangelical Free Church Community of Lichterfelde-Ost and joined it. Only a short time later she joined the Bethel Sisterhood founded by Eduard Scheve in 1887 and was preparing for her mission as a missionary doctor. Under the auspices of the European Baptist Federation , she traveled to northern Cameroon in 1969, where she worked as a doctor up to and including 1971. A detailed report on their activities there is available in the regional church archive in Stuttgart.

After her return from Africa and a three-month travel service with which she campaigned for German Baptist congregations to support medical work in Northern Cameroon, Mechtild Schröder initially practiced as a general practitioner. In 1975 she sent the Bethel Deaconess House to Welzheim . There, the Evangelical Free Church Diakoniewerk had acquired the former district hospital of the Rems-Murr district and commissioned Mechtild Schröder with restructuring the facility into a specialist clinic for geriatric medicine and then with the management of the clinic. Her tasks also included setting up a free church diakonia station. Today the hospital works under the name Geriatric Rehabilitation Clinic Bethel Welzheim . Attached to it is a senior citizens' center, which was inaugurated in 1980, and a nursing service. During her time in Welzheim, Sr. Mechtild was appointed to the leadership of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches . She held this office from 1975 to 1986.

After the development work in Welzheim, Mechtild Schröder was appointed Superior of the Bethel Sisterhood in 1981. So she was also a board member of the Diakoniewerk and the Diakoniegemeinschaft. During her time as the leading deaconess, some significant expansions were made to the Bethel Diakoniewerk. In 1984, for example, the Bethel retirement home opened its doors on Morgensternstrasse in Berlin. In 1991 the Diakoniestation Bethel started in Berlin-Friedrichshain as the first institution of its kind in the eastern part of Berlin. In 1994, senior centers in Friedrichshain and Köpenick , which had previously been under different sponsorship, were taken over by Bethel. A year later, the Steglitz boys' home , initiated by Peter Dienel and others in the 1950s, was accepted into the Bethel Diakonieverband.

The outpatient Diakonie-Hospiz Wannsee was founded in Berlin-Zehlendorf on October 1, 1996 on the initiative of Mechtild Schröder (Diakoniegemeinschaft Bethel) and Oberin Helga Heß (Evangelischer Diakonieverein Berlin-Zehlendorf eV).

In 1997 Mechtild Schröder retired, but continued to work voluntarily in various diaconal areas at home and abroad. For example, on behalf of the European Baptist Federation, it supported the establishment of health and social care in Georgia as well as in the Polish city of Lodz . In the south-west of Berlin, she helped to set up and expand the Bethel Hospice Van-Delden, the establishment of which reached back into her active time as superior.

Mechtild Schröder died after a short, serious illness.
