Mecklenburg Culture Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mecklenburg Culture Prize was founded in 1964 as the culture prize of the Mecklenburg Landsmannschaft by the Mecklenburg Landsmannschaft in Ratzeburg and awarded until 1996.

A total of 24 writers, historians, musicians and folklorists were honored with the Mecklenburg Culture Prize. According to the award guidelines of the Landsmannschaft Mecklenburg, the cultural award was awarded to personalities "who have promoted Mecklenburg cultural work through intellectual and creative achievements or exemplary activities." The Mecklenburg Culture Prize was the highest distinction that the Landsmannschaft Mecklenburg had to award.

The honor took place for the first time in 1964 by handing over the honorary certificate to the writer Friedrich Griese , later initially annually, and finally every two years. In addition to the culture award, the Mecklenburg Landsmannschaft also awarded the Fritz Reuter Medal, donated in 1960 on the occasion of Fritz Reuter's 150th birthday, as a further award for services to Mecklenburg culture and the Low German language . The first recipients were Friedrich Griese and the Reuter reciter Ernst Hameister .

The Mecklenburg Culture Prize should not be confused with the Culture Prize of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, founded by the state in 1994 .
