In 1896 only silver and bronze medals were awarded, the third-placed were empty.

Two bronze medals were awarded in the high jump, none in the high jump. There were two third places each in three competitions: 100-meter run, pole vault, tennis singles. There was no third place in ten competitions: Foil for fencing master, 110-meter hurdles, high jump, 100-km cycle race, 12-hour cycle race, 100-meter freestyle swimming, parallel bars individual, horizontal bar individual, horizontal bar team, pommel horse.
