This table shows the medal table of the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne . The placements are sorted according to the number of gold medals won, followed by the number of silver and bronze medals ( lexicographical order ). If two or more countries have an identical medal balance, they are listed alphabetically on the same rank. This corresponds to the system used by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) .

A total of 151 competitions were held. The additional medals were as follows:

  • Boxing: Traditionally, two bronze medals were awarded in each of the ten weight classes.
  • Athletics: In the women's high jump, silver and no bronze were awarded twice, in the men's 400 meters, bronze was awarded twice.
  • Gymnastics: In the men's horse vault and in the women's floor exercise, gold was awarded twice, but no silver, in the men's floor exercise, silver and no bronze were awarded three times, silver and no bronze were awarded twice on the balance beam, on the bars, on the rings, Bronze was awarded twice on the balance beam and in the group gymnastics.
