The Medelserhütte ( Romansh Camona da Medel ) is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and property of the Uto (Zurich) section of the SAC. The hut is named after the Medelser massif with the Piz Medel ( 3210  m above sea level ), the summit of which is the main tour destination of the hut. The hut is manned in summer and partly also in winter and has 55 beds in six rooms: one room for four, one for five and one for six as well as two rooms for ten and twenty. If the hut is not manned, a winter room is available , as is the case with all SAC huts .

location

The hut stands on the crest of the Fuorcla da Lavaz, a pass crossing between the Val Plattas and the Val Lavaz in the Surselva region , south of the Anterior Rhine Valley and is the starting point for numerous interesting high-altitude tours in the Medelser group.

history

In 1910 the first wooden hut was built as a refuge on Fuorcla da Lavaz, which was replaced by a stone building in 1934. This building, which still exists today, was enlarged and renewed in 1984 and 2006. In 2010 the 100th anniversary of the hut was celebrated.

Nearby glaciers

The system of the Medelsergletscher (Glatscher da Medel) catches the eye from the restaurant of the hut . This glacier field stretches from Fil Liung (which practically begins at the hut) to Piz Cristallina in a width of approx. Three kilometers and is therefore one of the large glacier fields in the Graubünden Alps. The individual lobes are separated by the secondary peaks Refugi da Camutschs and Piz la Buora at approx. 2800  m and are called Glatscher da Plattas (east and middle lobes ) and Glatscher Davos la Buora (west lobes). Among other things, due to the different slopes of the terrain and the mountain ranges that separate the lobes, the glaciers are sometimes very cleft.

Furthermore, in a side valley of the Val Lavaz there are the remains of the Glatscher da Lavaz, which is receding sharply and no longer has any noteworthy crevices. The path from the hut to the Fuorcla Sura da Lavaz and further into the Greina plain leads over this glacier, which can be crossed without any problems with suitable equipment (see below).
