The Media Convention Berlin (MCB) is a congress around the current issues of the international media economy, society and politics. It has been held annually at STATION-Berlin since 2014 and is being organized by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb) in partnership with the digital conference re: publica , on behalf of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg .

As part of the congress, a wide range of topics will be dealt with by around 150 speakers on three stages over two days, from innovations such as virtual reality to exploitation strategies and entertainment formats to topics such as media regulation and media policy.

history

The Media Convention Berlin emerged from the Medienwoche @ IFA, which took place from 2005 to 2013 as part of the International Radio Exhibition (IFA) in Berlin. In connection with the IFA, the world's most important trade fair for consumer electronics, the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium and numerous other top-class events, the Medienwoche @ IFA was one of the most important industry gatherings in Europe. The conference organizer was the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg in cooperation with the gfu, on behalf of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg and supported by the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg.

The first Media Convention Berlin took place on May 6th and 7th, 2014 and focused on the exchange between established and new media. Among the 102 national and international speakers and keynoters were Klaas Heufer-Umlauf (Circus HalliGalli), Richard Porter ( BBC ), Boris Wasmuth (GameDuell), Jon Handschin ( Moviepilot ), Christoph Krachten (Media Kraft), Dagmar Reim (rbb ), Rowan Barnett ( Twitter ), Ingrid Deltrene (EBU), Timm Richter ( Xing ), Stefan Zilch ( Spotify ), Thomas Kufus (Zero One Film), Dorothee Bär , Brigitte Zypries , Benjamin Ruth ( VICE Media Germany), Claus Strunz ( Axel Springer ), Jochen Wegner ( ZEIT ONLINE ), Katharina Borchert ( SPIEGEL ONLINE ), The Yes Men , the team from Fack ju Göhte , Circus HalliGalli .

At the Media Convention Berlin 2015 , trends, strategies, revenue models and media policy were discussed. Among the speakers were Netflix founder Reed Hastings , ARD director Lutz Marmor , the political and media activists from Pussy Riot , YouTube star LeFloid , Springer manager Christoph Keese , blogger Stefan Niggemeier , state secretary Brigitte Zypries , investigative journalist Günter Wallraff , sociologist Prof . Dr. Harald Welzer , Sky Germany boss Marcus Ammon or actress Meret Becker . In 2015, more than 7,000 participants from Germany and abroad visited the Media Convention Berlin and re: publica. As part of the MCB15, the winners of the Medienboard-sponsored “Your Turn - The Video Creator Competition” were chosen for the first time and cash prizes totaling 70,000 euros were awarded. In addition, innovative technologies from the areas of TV, web, transmedia, mobile and games, from virtual reality to branded video publishing to automated animation could be tried out in the Exhibition Space.

At the Media Convention Berlin 2016 , content trends, the challenges posed by digitization to regulation, new business models, aspects of ensuring diversity and the social effects of a dynamic media landscape were discussed. On the stages of the MCB16, among others, Stanford thinker Barbara van Schewick spoke about the complex topic of net neutrality . University of Oxford professor Luciano Floridi and other experts - connected live: Edward Snowden - investigated the questions that arise at the threshold of the infosphere, at the interfaces of media and network politics, from the use of media via the Internet. Disney veteran Nick van Dyk ( Activision Blizzard ) discussed the current development from games companies to large multimedia corporations and Matthias Schweighöfer spoke about his new project "You are Wanted", the first German Amazon Originals series.

In 2019 the conference counted over 10,000 visitors. 216 speakers gave 63 lectures, panel discussions and workshops under the heading “Playing for Keeps” about the decisive economic and social changes in the media world as a result of digitization.
