Meinrad Maria Grewenig (born  June 9, 1954 in Saarbrücken ) is a German art historian , museum director and cultural manager .

Vita

After graduating from secondary school in Völklingen in 1974, he studied art history, classical archeology , educational sciences , philosophy and Catholic theology at Saarland University and Salzburg University . In 1983 he received his doctorate in art history, classical archeology and philosophy. From the following year he worked as a scientific assistant to Georg W. Költzsch , at that time director of the Saarland Museum in Saarbrücken . In 1988 he was entrusted with the management of the museum director, a year later he was appointed deputy director. From 1992 to 1999 he was director of the Palatinate History Museum in Speyer and executive director of the Museum Foundation. Since leaving there he has been General Director and Managing Director of the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site . In May 2011, he was in personal union acting head of the Foundation Saarland Cultural Heritage named after against their leave of absence CEO Ralph Melcher investigation of the prosecution had been initiated for embezzlement of public funds. His interim chairmanship ended in April 2013. In the early 1990s, Grewenig also worked as an honorary artistic director of the St. Ingbert Museum .

On March 26, 2020, the Supervisory Board confirmed, at the suggestion of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, that Grewenig's position as General Director of the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site will be taken over by Ralf Beil from May 1, 2020 .

Grewenig is married and has three daughters together with his wife Anette. He lives with his family in Völklingen in the Saarland.

  • 1972: State winner Saarland at Jugend forscht , mathematics and computer science, participation in the national competition
  • 1980–1983: PhD scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation (scholarship for highly gifted students )
  • 1987/88: "Scholarship holder of the year" for the John J. McCloy scholarship for museum scholars in the USA, named by the selection committee of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin
  • 1996: Max Slevogt Medal in recognition of many years of special service to the fine arts in Rhineland-Palatinate
  • 1996: Award for special services to the tourism of the city of Speyer from the hotel and restaurant association Kreisstelle Speyer
  • 1997: Winninger Wine Prize 1996 for special services to the culture of wine
  • 1998: Knight of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem
  • 2011: Awarded the title of professor by the Saarland state government
  • 2016: Chevalier in the Ordre national du Mérite
