The Saarland Museum is a museum in the Saarland capital of Saarbrücken , which is supported by the Saarland Cultural Heritage Foundation . It currently has three locations, each with a different focus.

management

It is thanks to Rudolf Bornschein , the first director of the Modern Gallery, that a collection of expressionist art was built up. His successor was Georg W. Költzsch, whose commitment to the Informel particularly shaped the collection in this direction. He was followed by Ernst G. Güse who showed important exhibitions on the works of Jean Dubuffet , Giorgio Morandi and Arnulf Rainer and underscored the high status of the museum and its collections to date.

The former director Ralph Melcher was dismissed without notice in October 2011 for gross breach of duty after the public prosecutor's office launched an investigation into him for embezzlement of public funds. From May 2011 to April 2013, the acting director of the museum was the art historian and general director of the Alte Völklinger Hütte world heritage site, Meinrad Maria Grewenig . Roland Mönig has been director since December 2013 .

Locations

Museum in the castle church

The museum housed in the Saarbrücken castle church shows sacred art from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Also noteworthy are the baroque princely graves and the colorful windows by Georg Meistermann . The castle church was modernized in 2004 and connected to the “old collection” in the district building with a new glass access wing, which is attached to the south side of the choir . The Saar College of Music also uses the premises of the castle church as a permanent venue for musical performances. Since 2012, contemporary art exhibitions have been held in the nave of the castle church, for example by Roland Fischer and Eberhard Bosslet .

Old collection

Dieffler Pietà , wooden sculpture from the former Dieffler Wendelin chapel, probably 16th to 18th century, dimensions 78 × 56 × 30 cm, (Saarland Museum, Old Collection, Depot, I-Nr. KII-63)

The old collection is housed in the district building next to Saarbrücken Castle and focuses on artists from the 16th to 19th centuries. These include Dutch painters such as Abraham Mignon , Joos de Momper , Gillis van Coninxloo and Johann Boumann with landscapes and still lifes from the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition, regional artists such as Johann Christian von Mannlich can also be seen. The collection is thematically structured according to different directions of painting. A presentation of silver and porcelain objects , coins , miniatures and furniture complete the collection.

Modern gallery

The modern gallery was built according to plans by the architect Hanns Schönecker between 1965 and 1978 on the banks of the Saar next to the Saarland State Theater . Initially three connected pavilions were available, a fourth pavilion was planned over decades. In 2007 a construction phase marked by scandals began. This "became a cultural-political disaster, the costs exploded, there were cases of embezzlement and corruption, layoffs, an angry population and finally construction freezes." After the project was taken over in 2013 by the Kuehn Malvezzi architecture firm , the fourth pavilion was opened in 2017.

The modern gallery shows art from the 19th century to the present day. The most important groups of works include works from the Berlin Secession , Expressionism and informal art. The extensive graphic collection has around 18,000 works on paper. The holdings also include a collection of photographs that are given their profile through the estate of Monika von Boch , a student of Otto Steinert . The Saarland Museum also has an extensive collection of works by the artist Alexander Archipenko . In addition, there are regular temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
