Mel Lastman

Melvin Douglas ("Mel") Lastman (born March 9, 1933 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian politician, the mayor of North York from 1972 to 1997 and from January 1, 1998 to November 30, 2003 the 62nd mayor of Toronto was.

Mel Lastman is the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. He began his career selling fruits and vegetables at Kensington Market and started his own company Bad Boy Furniture at the age of 22 . Lastman's political career began in 1969 when he was elected to the Executive Board of Control of what was then North York Ward.

Lastman has been a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario since 1987 and after the restructuring of the Metropolitan Toronto by amalgamation of surrounding communities, he prevailed against Barbara Hall , who was mayor of Toronto from 1994 to 1997. His victory was based primarily on the districts of North York and Etobicoke and Scarborough . Hall was able to unite the majority in the districts of Old Toronto , York and East York . In November 2000, Lastman was re-elected with an 80% majority.
