Melanie Brinkmann

Melanie Margarete Brinkmann (born January 6, 1974 in Neustadt am Rübenberge ) is a German virologist .

Education and professional career

Melanie Brinkmann studied biology at the University of Göttingen and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 2004, she was at the University of Hannover doctorate and with the promotional price of the Hannover Medical School excellent. In her doctoral thesis, Brinkmann dealt with Kaposi's sarcoma . In 2007 she received the postdoctoral award for virology from the Robert Koch Foundation .

Supported by a research scholarship of the German Research Foundation (DFG) Brinkmann worked 2006-2010 as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Hidde L. Ploegh at the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge , Massachusetts . There she did research on toll-like receptors .

In July 2010 she took over the leadership of the junior research group “Viral Immunomodulation ” at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research in Braunschweig . She was and is involved in several DFG research projects in the fields of virology and immunology ; For example, from 2005 to 2008 she received a research grant from the DFG for her research on the subject of toll-like receptors: Targets of herpesviral immune evasion? and has been the sub-project leader of the DFG project Modulation of the Immune Response by the Gamma Herpes Viruses Kaposi Sarcoma-Associated Herpes Virus and Murine Herpes Virus 68 (B03) since 2010 . In 2016 Brinkmann received the Science Award from the Signal Transduction Society.

In 2018 Brinkmann became Professor of Virology at the Technical University of Braunschweig , where she represents the research focus “Infections and Active Ingredients”.

Media appearance

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , Brinkmann increasingly appeared in public and was co-signatory of a letter from 100 doctors calling for stronger action to be taken against incorrect information about the COVID-19 pandemic . The ARD Tagesschau quotes it as follows: "We have to ensure that information that is not yet available does not find mass distribution."
