history

After there was a forerunner offer via the FidoNet , a mailbox network, in May 1995 , metal.de went online on October 1, 1996 under the name The Dark Site . The first editor-in-chief, Truhe, programmed the site himself and set up the content with friends. As early as 1997, the team added small audio clips in real audio format to the CD reviews . In 1998 the first major update followed, as well as its own small search engine, the first German metal mailing list and a newsletter . Since 1999 there has been cooperation with advertising partners and event organizers, as well as another update. In that year the name was also changed to metal.de. In 2004 a new forum was activated and the layout and logo were revised.

In March 2011, the technology and design of the site changed again. Individual genre portals were introduced that allow the content to be filtered according to the individual metal genres. The logo was also completely redesigned in this context. The new version was made by the Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu. After Eckart Maronde took over the position of editor-in-chief in October 2013, the content of the magazine was further diversified. Since then, a regular review of the previous month ( monthly review ), discography overviews of individual bands ( discography check ) and articles in list format ( Die 10 ... ) have been an integral part of the magazine's content.

In May 2016 the site was revised again: A new version is optimized for mobile devices. In addition, the logo has been moderately revised. The forum, in turn, was switched off in this context.

In addition to the online offer, metal.de is represented with its own stand at festivals. The metal.de editorial team has been organizing the autograph sessions at the Summer Breeze Open Air alongside the Metal Hammer since the mid-2000s . At the Rockharz Open Air in Ballenstedt in the East Harz region, metal.de is the only organizer of the autograph sessions in 2011. However, the engagement at the Ragnarök Festival in Lichtenfels was temporary (2012 and 2013) .
