The Ragnarök Festival has been an annual metal festival since 2004 . The focus is on pagan , folk , viking and black metal , with a few bands of other styles of metal also performing each year . The organizer is Nemeton Event GmbH with managing director Ivo Raab.

In 2004 the festival took place in Hollfeld without genre specialization , but this was changed in 2005. From 2006 to 2009 it took place in Lichtenfels ; 2010 on a larger scale in the Ostbayernhalle in Rieden-Kreuth . Due to various complications, the festival has taken place again in the Lichtenfelser Stadthalle since 2011, which has also resulted in a reduction in the number of bands and visitors.

The name is derived from Ragnarök , the end of the world in Norse mythology . It is considered the biggest festival for pagan metal and every year it attracts visitors from the USA , Mexico , Russia and all over Europe. Up until 2007 in particular, like large parts of this scene, it was criticized for tolerating right-wing extremist tendencies. The festival sees itself as "non-political" and is now actively taking action against the infiltration of the Ragnaröks and the scene by right-wing ideas.

Note:
  1. In addition to the 25 performing bands, Myrkgrav was present for listening sessions.
  2. 25 bands were planned, but three had to cancel their appearance in advance. The loss of XIV Dark Centuries also had to be compensated by Gernotshagen during the second day of the festival .

2004

The first Ragnarök was organized by Ivo Raab on February 14, 2004 in the Hollfeld town hall , as he was looking for a performance opportunity for his black metal band Circle of Obscurity. The other eight bands Daemonilatria, Defection, Killing Spree, Madisson, Mortal Intention, Obstinacy, Possession and Voodoma played mostly Death Metal . The first edition of the festival was attended by around 120 spectators.

2005

The second edition of the festival also took place in Hollfeld. On March 12, 2005 Eisregen , Menhir , Månegarm , XIV Dark Centuries , Equilibrium , Thirdmoon , Circle of Obscurity, Conspiracy and Mortal Intention performed. Due to the selection of bands , a Viking stand and a bar , this festival had a clearer reference to Pagan - and Viking Metal .

The allegations of an anti-fascist organization that the Ragnarök Festival was a right-wing extremist festival because of the name resulted in an enormous police presence on site. Instead of the planned 2000 visitors, after an agreement with the police, who originally only wanted 600 people into the hall, 1100 could be let in.

2006

In 2006 the Ragnarök Festival took place for the first time over two days. The Lichtenfels town hall, which is significantly larger than the Hollfeld town hall, was chosen as the venue. On April 7th and 8th, Black Messiah , Creature, Equilibrium , Fallen Yggdrasil, Gernotshagen , Helheim , Korpiklaani , Menhir , Moonsorrow , Nomans Land , Odroerir , Orlog, Primordial , Riger , Skyforger , Sycronomica , Thrudvangar , Turisas and XIV Dark Centuries performed in front of 2800 spectators. Raab's co-organizer quit after Ragnarök II, because he feared an even greater financial fiasco and further problems with the police when the festival moved to the Lichtenfels town hall, which however did not materialize.

2007

The prunk horn raffled off in 2008

A year later, on March 30 and 31, 2007, Angantyr, Moonsorrow , Kampfar , Swallow the Sun , Vreid , Týr , Helheim , Månegarm , Cruachan , Hel , Black Messiah , Riger , Eluveitie , Minas Morgul , Aaskereia, Koldbrann , Sycronomica , Fjoergyn , Urgehal, Gernotshagen , Heidevolk and Wolfchant , Kromlek , Dawn of Blood and Varg in front of 4000 spectators. Taake's performance was canceled due to the singer's swastika scandal at a concert in Essen ; Wintersun canceled because of the work on the next album Time . This year, around € 1500 was collected for victims of fascist violence through a raffle and donated to the White Ring .

2008

On March 30th and 31st, 2008 the following 28 bands performed: Agalloch , Alestorm , Arkona , Battlelore , Elexorien , Haggard , Hellsaw , Helritt , Helrunar , Killing Spree, Menhir , Minas Morgul , Negura Bunget , Norther , Primordial , Sear Bliss , Skyforger , Svartsot , Sworn , Trimonium, Trollfest , Turisas , Unleashed , Vreid , Winterdome , Wolfchant and XIV Dark Centuries . With 5000 visitors, the festival should have almost exhausted the capacity of the venue. It is noticeable that bands like Haggard and Battlelore were invited for the first time . In cooperation with the former Nordahl-Versand , a raffle was organized, the proceeds of which went to the German Children's Cancer Aid . The main prize was a special production of a 2.5 liter magnificent horn with silver decorations .

This year the following bands played in Lichtenfels on April 17th & 18th: Adorned Brood , Alestorm , Alkonost , Andras , Cor Scorpii , Dark Fortress , Dornenreich , Draugnim , Einherjer , Falchion , Fejd , Finsterforst , Fjoergyn , Heidevolk , Irrbloss , Kivimetsän Druidi , Korpiklaani , Månegarm , Melechesh , Metsatöll , Midnattsol , Sarcoma , Thyrfing , Týr , Wolfchant , Yggdrasil . The festival management was aiming for 5,000 visitors, although the press sometimes also mentions around 6,000 visitors.

A custom made electric guitar was raffled this year in Flying-V shape with Thorshammer sidestamp and 15 Drinking Horns.

Ragnarök's Aaskereia Festival Tour

Together with the German label Nuclear Blast , the Ragnarök management organized the Ragnarök 's Aaskereia Festival Tour in October 2008 , which served as a preview and promotion for the festival. The name Aaskereia is the Germanic word for the wild hunt , a folk myth about the appearance of a supernatural hunting party in the night sky.

The five performing bands Alestorm , Svartsot, Hollenthon , Týr and Gwydion. toured between October 8th and 26th, 2008 through Denmark , Germany , the Netherlands , Belgium , the Czech Republic , Switzerland , Austria , Italy and Hungary . They completed a total of 18 live shows.

2010

In terms of the number of bands, Ragnarök 7 was the largest edition of the festival to date. From April 29 to May 1, 2010, a total of 38 bands from 9 countries performed in front of around 4,000 spectators in the Ostbayernhalle in Rieden-Kreuth . Originally 39 bands were to perform with Varg . Due to the controversy surrounding their singer Philipp Seiler , the festival management decided to perform without him. However, this was rejected, which is why the whole gig was canceled by the band.

The line-up consisted of the following bands: Agathodaimon , Akrea , Arkona , Belphegor , Carach Angren , Catamenia , Ctulu , Ensiferum , Equilibrium , Fjoergyn , Gorgoroth , Grailknights , Haggard , Heathen Foray , Helfahrt, Hellsaw, Helrunar , Hollenthon , Imperium Dekadenz, Ingrimm, Kromlek , Midnattsol , Nachtgeschrei , Obscurity , Ragnarok , Ragnaröek , Riger , Sarke, Skyforger , Slartibartfass , Sólstafir , Suidakra , The Vision Bleak , Thormesis , Van Canto , Vreid and Wolves in the Throne Room .

2011

The eighth edition of the Ragnarök Festival took place on April 29th and 30th in the town hall in Lichtenfels. The reasons for returning to the previous venue are scheduling problems with the Ostbayernhalle, as they wanted a school vacation again, and the changed fire protection regulations for the Ostbayernhalle. The large amount of space on the property of the Matheshof estate, to which the Ostbayernhalle belongs, was particularly advantageous for campers. In order to get a grip on the space problem of the campground behind the hall, additional areas behind the hall were rented in 2011 compared to 2009. On Thursday, April 28th, there was a warm-up party with a DJ. A total of around 3500 people visited the festival this year.

Twilight of the Gods live at the 2011 Ragnarök Festival

The line-up consists of the following 27 bands: Adorned Brood , Agrypnie , Alcest , Arafel , Battlelore , Bifröst , BlackShore, Bran Barr , Catamenia , Ctulu , Dalriada , Eïs , Enslaved , Graveworm , Helrunar , Ignis Fatuu , Kampfar , Månegarm , Negură Bunget , Obscurity , Odroerir , Orphaned Land , Path of Golconda , Thyrfing , Todtgelichter , Twilight of the Gods and Valkyrja .

This year there were an unusually large number of band cancellations and line-up changes shortly before the festival. Wolfchant was the first band to cancel their appearance at the Ragnarök Festival on March 26, 2011 “for personal reasons”; a replacement band was not signed. On April 18, the American band Hammer Horde canceled and accused the festival management of failing to fulfill the contract. Arafel was signed as a replacement . The Swedish band Shining also canceled their performance on April 21, 2011 because of the departure of their guitarist Fredric Gråby. Fourth, the German band Vrankenvorde canceled their appearance at the Ragnarök Festival. Helrunar and Adorned Brood were booked as replacement bands for Shining and Vrankenvorde . A few hours before the start of the warm-up party, a fifth band, Sahg, canceled at short notice .

2012

In 2012 the festival took place again in Lichtenfels, from 12.-14. April, instead. In front of 4,000 spectators, 26 bands performed for the festival, one less than last year: A Forest of Stars , Abinchova (winner of the opener band contest), Absu , Agalloch , Dark Fortress , Dordeduh, Einherjer , Fejd , Heol Telwen , Imperious, Impiety , King of Asgard , Mael Mórdha , Mistur , Moonsorrow , Nachtmystium , Rabenschrey , Skyclad , Sycronomica , Thurs, Varg , Velnias , Voluspaa , Waldgeflüster , Wolfchant , who are supposed to make up for their 2011 canceled appearance, and XIV Dark Centuries . As the third band (after Wolfchant and Einherjer), Lifelover was announced in the summer of 2011 , but split up on September 16, 2011 due to the death of band leader Jonas Berqvist. All upcoming concerts, including the appearance at the Ragnarök Festival, have been canceled. On February 15, 2012 it was announced that the line-up for 2012 was complete with the two last confirmed bands, Velnias and Impiety. Since Borknagar had to cancel their appearance at the Ragnarök Festival due to time constraints, a replacement headliner was announced on March 20, 2012 with Varg. Abinchova had to cancel her performance a few hours before the start of the festival due to the drummer's health problems, so that a total of 25 bands appeared.

In addition to the bands' regular live shows, Lars Jensen also had his own stand at the Ragnarök Festival with his folk metal project Myrkgrav . He presented the upcoming album Fortejingar Frå Finnefjerdingen at listening sessions and offered exclusive merchandise. This included new band shirts and the last 50 copies of the debut album Trollskau, Skrømt og Kølabrenning .

As in previous years, the overall organization of the festival was often praised, but there were massive problems with the dedicated security service. Dozens of visitors accused their employees of mobbing and insults, excessive aggressiveness, bodily harm , extortion and demands for bribes and the like. The festival management, who had already suspended the security service on Saturday evening, took the complaints very seriously and the festival visitors were asked to send their experiences with the company as affidavits to the festival organization so that a complete clarification could be granted. The security company denied these allegations to a large extent, citing the employees' lack of experience with metal festivals as a possible reason. A 27-year-old visitor died in an accident at the Ragnarök Festival in 2012. During the night from Friday to Saturday he slept in his car, which also had a smoldering grill, so that he probably died due to a lack of oxygen . When Fjoergyn performed, a minute's silence was observed in his honor the following year.

scope

In addition to the actual concert, the Ragnarök Festival has a large repertoire of additional offers every year. This has increased in diversity and scope from year to year. In addition to two sleeping halls, a canteen, a metal and medieval market and an autograph stand organized by the Legacy magazine, there have also been Viking camps, combat shows and a festival supermarket. Since 2009 it has also been possible to purchase tickets through the Berlin travel company Dominanz Travel Agency and then take a bus to the festival from a major German city (including Berlin , Hamburg , Dortmund , Cologne, etc.). A painting competition was also held in 2009 in which pictures were submitted to remind the festival audience of their own waste disposal.

criticism

Up until 2007 the festival, like many other metal festivals and especially the pagan metal scene, was criticized for opening the door to infiltration by law, which has since changed significantly.

In 2006 the 3rd Ragnarök Festival on the areas of pagan and black metal, the ideological proximity of parts of the scene to right-wing ideas, right-wing extremist attempts at infiltration and NSBM in the ARD magazines Polylux and Panorama . So the performing bands Odroerir, whose statements were viewed critically, and Equilibrium were interviewed. Festival goers spoke of a neo-Nazi visitor share of "10 to 20 percent" and expressed themselves rather tolerantly towards Nazis ("They should think what they want"). Furthermore, several Absurd fans and especially in the panorama report Hitler greetings , which were recorded on the Ragnarök, were shown.

Festival organizer Ivo Raab felt cheated by the Polylux team and commented on the Legacy as follows:

“I fell for it classically. It was packed so nicely, as if reporting on neo-paganism, belief and the way of life and wanting to film Pagan Metal because it could be counted as youth culture and because of the lyrics. [In the finished report] there was nothing left of this explanation. […] I told [the reporter] from the start that there would be a couple of weirdos there and that we would do something about them, only that I couldn't kick any of them out beforehand. […] In the end it was presented as if I didn't care if there were all Nazis there. […] At the time, ARD assured me that I would get to see the material beforehand - I then saw it on television. [...] Legally, I couldn't do anything, anyone who looks at the report several times knows that they differentiate. "

- Ivo Raab

The broadcasts showed the Ragnarök recordings mixed with secret recordings of the concert “Calling for Battle” in Wurzen , where the audience sings the chorus of the Landser song “Polackentango”, and two absurd concerts in Belgium and Erlangen , each of which was large Show parts of the audience the Hitler salute and chant "Sieg Heil".

Polylux also spoke of the “rather apolitical Ragnarök Festival”, but also stated that there was no “clear dividing line between the scenes”.

The Polylux report was attacked from parts of the metal scene. and the organizers accused the editors in an open letter of "one-sided research and partial distortion of the facts" ( Ivo Raab in an official statement on the Polylux report ). By compiling the report, the researching journalist had openly associated right-wing extremist bands with the entire scene and the festival inappropriately. The "absurd estimate of 20% Nazi share" made by a visitor could also be refuted by the criminal police and organizers at any time, said the presenter Metal1.info of "10 or 15" people. It is also stated that "the security staff [were] instructed. To immediately expel people who wore t-shirts with anti-constitutional symbols or who acted in any way unconstitutional from the festival. ”The absurd t-shirt shown in the Polylux report did not contain any such symbols.

Especially after the publication of the Polylux report, the festival management tried to take action against the law more actively and to prevent infiltration of the scene. This means that, unlike at other events and concerts, neo-Nazis are not only expelled from the festival site, but in 2008 two visitors were also reported by the organizers for wearing anti-constitutional symbols.

Nevertheless, in 2007 the well-known neo-Nazi Jens Fröhlich ( Totenburg , Eugenik ) sold right-wing extremist merchandise from the NSBM bands Absurd, Magog and Ad Hominem at a stand. According to a statement by the organizers, the owner of the sales stand, who was friends with Fröhlich, should no longer be invited.

Some neo-Nazis could still be found among the visitors in 2007 who wore t-shirts from relevant right-wing extremist bands or, as in 2006, showed the Hitler salute, which led to the expulsion of some of the participants from the festival hall.

According to its own statements, the festival has distanced itself since 2007 "in the sharpest way from any political, ideological and religious extremism, especially right-wing extremism / neo-Nazism." Since 2008, the homepage of the festival's official website has had a banner with the inscription "Pagan Metal against Fascism and Political Violence." ".
