Eluveitie (pronounced "el-veiti") is a nine-member Swiss folk metal - band from Winterthur , whose members originally come from all parts of Switzerland. The band combines Celtic folklore with a metal sound (mostly influenced by Melodic Death Metal ) in their music , which is why they can be classified as Celtic Metal . The lyrics of the band are based on the history, daily life and spirituality of the Celtic tribe of the Helvetii and are partly written in a reconstructed form of Helvetian Gaulish . The band name itself goes back to an inscription on a pottery shard from Mantua . On this is written in an Etruscan alphabet eluveitie , the Etruscan form of the Celtic word Helvetios (‹the Helvetians›). It is assumed that the Eluveitie belonged to an Etruscan family descended from Helvetians.

history

Foundation and Vên (2002–2005)

The band was founded in the winter of 2002 by Christian “Chrigel” Glanzmann as a studio project. In October of the following year the MCD Vên ( Helvetian Gaul for 'wild joy') was published. After very good reviews from the scene and the scene media, the members at the time decided to turn Eluveitie into a "real" band instead of a studio project.

Shortly afterwards the first shows were played (for example at the Christian metal festival Elements of Rock , which is extremely unusual for a pagan metal band) and Eluveitie signed a contract with the Dutch record label Fear Dark , which Vên also re-released in 2004 . Further live performances were played, for example at some festivals by Fear Dark, or as support from international pagan / folk metal greats such as Korpiklaani or Cruachan .

To mark the 15th anniversary of the German-Icelandic band Falkenbach , a limited tribute album was released in 2006 , for which Eluveitie also contributed a song (Vanadis) . There was also a change in the line-up at the beginning of this year. While a replacement at the hurdy-gurdy was found for Sarah Kiener in Anna Murphy , it was decided not to fill Linda Suter's position at the fiddle .

Spirit and Slania (2005-2008)

The recordings for the first studio album Spirit took place in December 2005. The album was released on June 2, 2006 on Fear Dark. A video for the song Of Fire, Winds and Wisdom was released on September 26, 2006. In September 2006 Eluveitie also toured Europe with the German band Odroerir . At the end of 2006 Eluveitie signed a new record deal with the German label Twilight Records . At the beginning of 2007 they played at the Ragnarök Festival .

In October 2007 the band announced they were working on a two-part acoustic album entitled Evocation . The release was announced for February 2008. In November 2007 Eluveitie signed a label deal with Nuclear Blast , whereupon the date for evocation was postponed to winter 2008.

The second studio album Slania was released on February 15, 2008. Before that, some of Slania's tracks had already been released on Myspace , including a video clip for Inis Mona based on the Breton song Tri martolod .

Sevan and Rafi Kirder announced their separation from Eluveitie in early June 2008. However, they promised to play the upcoming summer festivals up to and including the appearance at the Metalcamp Open Air 2008 in Slovenia. In July 2008 the new band members Kay Brem (bass) and Päde Kistler (bagpipe, whistles, guitar) were introduced.

In November 2008 the album Slania was re-released as a «Tour Edition». In addition to the album, this edition contains a live CD with the performance at Metalcamp 2008.

Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion and Everything Remains (as It Never Was) (from 2008)

The band announced in late November 2008 that they were working on a new album entitled Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion . In contrast to the previous releases, the album is a pure acoustic album and was released on April 17, 2009. On March 11, 2009, the song Omnos from the new album was released via Myspace , followed by the accompanying video on March 24. Since the beginning of April the complete album can be listened to as a live stream on Myspace .

The May edition of Metal Hammer was accompanied by an exclusive CD entitled Slania / Evocation I - The Arcane Metal Hammer Edition , which contained six songs from Evocation I and Slania as well as a previously unreleased medley .

In January 2010 the new CD Everything Remains (as It Never Was) was completed, which was released worldwide on February 19, 2010 and which, after the softer acoustic album, according to the band has reached the degree of hardness of Slania again . On the Everything Remains World Tour that followed , the band performed at numerous festivals and concerts throughout Europe, the American continent and also in India. At the Metalfest 2010 the band appeared together with Finntroll under the name Pagan Alliance and played songs from both bands. In August 2010 the band won the Metal Hammer Award as Newcomer of the Year at Wacken Open Air .

Helvetios (2012)

For the year 2012, the new album Helvetios was announced on September 1, 2011 and the recordings started at the same time. The album is the band's first concept album and is about the Gallic War. It was released on February 10, 2012 by Nuclear Blast . The song Meet the Enemy was made available on December 24, 2011 even before the album was released. A music video was released for the songs A Rose for Epona on January 19, 2012, and for Havoc on February 7, 2012. A concert of the Paganfest tour was recorded in Tilburg on March 18, 2012 by the London company Concert Live Ltd and released on March 24, 2012 as the official Eluveitie live album entitled Live on Tour . The band has announced the Helvetios World Tour for 2012/2013, which will take place in the second half of 2012 largely together with the Swedish power metal band Sabaton as their Swedish Empire Tour . On June 18, 2012, the compilation album The Early Years , released on August 17, was announced, consisting of newly recorded songs from the EP Vên and the debut album Spirit . In addition, the title Divico was published on The Early Years , which had previously remained unfinished for several years.

In September 2012 the band released the decision of guitarist Simeon “Sime” Koch to leave the band due to private circumstances. He was replaced by Rafael Salzmann.

In December 2013 Eluveitie announced that violinist Meri Tadić is leaving the band to pursue new goals. Nicole Ansperger from Across the Border joined Meri Tadic as a violinist.

On March 7, 2014 Eluveitie was the first metal band ever to win the Swiss Music Award in the “Best Live Act” category.

Origins and line-up changes (2014-2016)

During the European tour for their new album Origins, Eluveitie announced on November 20, 2014 via Facebook that Patrick “Päde” Kistler would no longer be part of the band without going into the reasons for the separation. For the rest of the tour, Matteo Sisti from Krampus has taken over from Patrick Kistler. On November 24, 2014, Patrick “Päde” Kistler published the reasons for the departure on his official Facebook page in German, English, French and Spanish.

With Origins, the band consistently continued on their path. The album received consistently positive reviews. Videos have been released for the songs King and The Call of the Mountains . The latter was recorded for Nuclear Blasts Mailorder Edition in addition to the English-language album version in Swiss German, French, Italian and Romansh.

Nicole Ansperger also left the band in mid-2015 and has since been replaced live by Shir-Ran Yinon from Leipzig.

In November 2015, the band performed a reinterpretation of the piece In der Halle des Bergkönigs by Edvard Grieg on the television program Rock the Classic .

At the beginning of May 2016 it was announced that drummer Merlin Sutter was to leave the band after internal disputes. Out of solidarity, Anna Murphy and Ivo Henzi also decided to leave. At that time, they were in the middle of working on a new album. Violinist Shir-Ran Yinon also left the band in 2016 (she has been with Krayenzeit since 2017 ). As a result of the upheavals, Chrigel gathered a whole squad of guest musicians for the upcoming concerts in 2016 in order to be able to play the missing concerts, among other things. a. Jonas Wolf on guitar, Alain Ackermann on drums, Michalina Malisz on hurdy-gurdy, Fredy Schnyder and Brendan Wade on additional instruments such as uillean pipes and dulcimer, as well as - as a special guest - the Norwegian singer Liv Kristine , who through the bands Leaves' Eyes and the Theater of Tragedy . In addition, Helga Ragnarsdóttir from the Icelandic folk metal band Skálmöld stepped in for Kay Brem at some concerts on bass and Nicole Ansperger returned as a violinist. After the band then had a few appearances with Laura Fella instead of Liv Kristine as a singer from the end of 2016 to the beginning of 2017 (she switched to Faun a little later ), Fabienne Erni finally joined the singer and Jonas Wolf, Alain Ackermann, Michalina Malisz and Matteo Sisti were promoted to permanent band members.

  32. Official statement on my separation from Eluveitie. In: Facebook. November 24, 2014, archived from the original on August 7, 2019 : « […] After an unbelievable 6.5 years and an enormous amount of experience with the band, personal differences have come to a head in my life as well as within the band. I had a slightly more difficult time in my life, this had an impact on relationships within the band and also the ability to meet expectations (no, no addiction problems :-P and they are solved so far). The personal differences had come to a head in the last, very intense months in the album production phase and the intense time on tour that followed. Finally, the simple majority of the band (but not all) decided by democratic vote to expel me from the band, we are still very Swiss ;-) […] »;
