Michael Georgiou (born January 18, 1988 in London ) is an English snooker player of Greek Cypriot descent.

Career

Michael Georgiou was born in Forest Hill in the southeast of the capital London. His parents come from the Greek part of Cyprus . He started playing billiards at the age of nine and took lessons from a snooker trainer in Cyprus. Even as a young player, he drew attention to himself when he reached the quarter-finals of the U-19 European Championship and won the U-21 World Championship in 2007 . Along with Mark Selby and Mark Allen , he was one of five young players selected for the Hotspots advertising campaign. The U-21 title also gave him a place on the Snooker Main Tour in the 2008/09 season . However, in his first year as a professional player he was not up to the demands and remained without a win. At the season finale at the 2009 Snooker World Championship , he only just failed 8:10 against Matthew Couch and then dropped out of the professional tour.

The following year Georgiou tried in vain to return via the PIOS tournaments before taking a break and doing a regular office job. After two years and after some reforms in snooker, he tried again in 2012/13 with the qualification via the Q School . In the second tournament he narrowly failed in the quarterfinals on eventual winner Ahmed Saif and missed the return to the main tour. At the Players Tour Championship he was in the main draw five times in the 2013/14 season . At the second attempt via the Q School, he then qualified for the Main Tour for the second time in his career by reaching the finals in the second tournament, which this time was valid for the two following seasons.

At the first world ranking tournament, the Wuxi Classic , Michael Georgiou made it into the round of 32, and at the German Masters he was able to repeat the result. At the Welsh Open he reached a round of 16 for the first time. After a year he was 90th in the world rankings. In the 2015/16 season , however, only three more appearances were added to the round of 32: at the Australian Open , the Haining Open and again in Wales . He did not get past 73rd place and missed direct further qualification.

Again he had to apply through the Q School to participate in the Main Tour. For the first time he started there not for his native England, but for Cyprus . In the second tournament he managed to win the group over Craig Steadman and thus the continuation of his professional career.

In the 2017/18 season he won his first ranking tournament with the 2018 snooker shoot-out .

At the Paul Hunter Classic 2018 he scored the first maximum break of his career in his first round match against the German Umut Dikme.

At the Snooker World Championship 2019 he was able to qualify for the first time for the main round, in which he was defeated by Neil Robertson 1:10.
