Kyren Wilson with the trophy

The Paul Hunter Classic 2018 was a snooker tournament of the Main Tour - 2018/19 season , which was held from August 24th to 26th in the Fürth town hall. Once again, most of the top players stayed away from the tournament. Last year's finalist Shaun Murphy was the best-placed competitor, out of the top 16 of the world rankings next nor were Kyren Wilson and Luca Brecel represented. Last year's winner Michael White also defended his title, but retired in the third round against Zhang Anda .

The Cypriot Michael Georgiou managed the 140th maximum break in professional snooker in his first round match against the German Umut Dikme . It was the first of the season and Georgiou's first. Just one lap later, Jamie Jones also scored his first 147 break. It was the 6th in the history of the Paul Hunter Classic.

The winner was Kyren Wilson , who beat Peter Ebdon 4-2 in an English final . For Wilson it was the second tournament victory in his career.

There was no parallel women's tournament this time as in the last two years, instead the fourth event of the Amateurs Challenge Tour was held in Fürth immediately afterwards , which was won by ex-professional Mitchell Mann .

Prize money

In terms of prize money, the previous year's level was maintained, but the tournament remained by far the tournament with the lowest value in the Main Tour.

Prize money
winner £ 20,000
finalist £ 10,000
Semi-finalist £ 4,500
Quarter finalist £ 3,000
Round of 16 £ 1,725
Last 32 £ 1,000
Last 64 600 pounds
Maximum break £ 20,000
All in all £ 120,000

The maximum break bonus had risen to £ 20,000 after the World Open . As there were two 147 breaks this time, the money was divided equally between Michael Georgiou and Jamie Jones .

Preliminary round

A total of 219 players registered this time, 144 of them were amateurs. On August 22nd and 23rd, the 47 players among them were determined in two rounds, who then played the main tournament with the professionals and the other seeded players on Friday.

39 amateurs from Germany, four Austrians and four Swiss had registered for the tournament, 10 of them made it to the main tournament. These included ex-professional Patrick Einsle , Felix Frede and Umut Dikme - the three Germans had already survived the preliminary round in previous years - as well as the two finalists of the Austrian championship Florian Nüßle and Andreas Ploner .

Three women also took part in the tournament. Ng On Yee from Hong Kong, reigning world champion and winner of the Paul Hunter Ladies Classic 2016 , made it into the main tournament for the first time.

Main tournament

With the third round of the tournament, the main tournament began with 128 participants. The top half of the seeding list played its first three rounds on Friday, August 24th, and the bottom half was at the tables on Saturday. The last four rounds from the round of 16 to the final were played on the final Sunday.

Round 1 to the round of 16

In the first round there was a top duel between Shaun Murphy and Fergal O'Brien , which the previous year's finalist from England surprisingly lost. O'Brien was eliminated one lap later. The second unexpected defeat of the opening round hit Zhou Yuelong , number 32 in the world rankings, who lost 4-0 to the young talent Jackson Page . The Welshman defeated two other professionals with Ian Burns and Sam Baird and only lost to Scott Donaldson in the round of 16 . The tournament was also disappointing for the new professionals Adam Stefanów and Andy Lee , who were all eliminated by amateurs right at the start. Andreas Ploner won his first round match against Basem Eltahhan and was the only amateur from German-speaking countries to make it into round 2. Felix Frede could not exploit a 3-0 lead against Zhang Jiankang . Umut Dikme was able to keep up to 2-2 against Michael Georgiou , although he had to watch as the Englishman starting for Cyprus scored the first maximum break of his career in frame 3 . In the end, however, the game ended 2: 4.

In addition to Ploner, the three professionals from Germany and Switzerland also survived the opening game. The Austrian runner-up then had no chance against Peter Ebdon at 0: 4, and Alexander Ursenbacher and Simon Lichtenberg were clearly eliminated in round 2. Only Lukas Kleckers made it exciting , who equalized 0: 3 against Rod Lawler and made 61 points in the decision-making frame and then lost the marathon match to the black ball. The highlight of the second round was the second 147 break of the day by Jamie Jones , also for the first time for the Welshman. Unlike Georgiou, he didn't find his way after that and lost the next three frames and thus the game 2: 4 against his compatriot Lee Walker .

Apart from Page, no amateur had made it into round 3. He reached the round of 16 as did the remaining favorites Kyren Wilson , who only lost 2 frames on his first day, and Jack Lisowski , who also won twice to zero and only had to fight Lu Ning and went into the decider. The final Sunday, however, was missed by defending champion Michael White with a 1: 4 against Zhang Anda , as well as number 13 in the world rankings Luca Brecel , who lost 2: 4 to Chris Wakelin . Rod Lawler had started his third game last after the Kleckers match and had to play again against Jimmy Robertson in the decider. It was after 1 a.m. when his 4-3 defeat was established.

There was no decision frame at the beginning on Sunday in the round of 16. Lisowski 4-0 against Robertson and Kyren Wilson 4-1 against Hammad Miah lived up to their favorite roles. For the Englishman Miah it was the first round of 16 of his career anyway. Peter Ebdon also won 4-0 against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Zhang Anda against Harvey Chandler , who was among the last 16 for the first time in his first year as a professional. Peter Lines prevailed 4-2 against Mark Davis and although Lines had been on the pro tour since 1991, it was only the third time that he reached a quarter-finals in a ranking tournament. The last 8 completed the two Welshmen Lee Walker and Daniel Wells in addition to Page-defeated Scott Donaldson .

Quarter-finals to finals

The most exciting match of the quarter-finals was played by Jack Lisowski and Peter Lines . The 27-year-old Lisowski, already a finalist at the Riga Masters at the beginning of the season , took the lead 3-0, but then his 48-year-old opponent fought back point by point and equalized. In the decider, Lines once again equalized a clear lead from Lisowski and saved himself in the duel for the black ball. Lisowski approached the decision with a lot of risk, but it didn't pay off and Lines used his uncertain deposit to win the 4-3. He had made it to the semi-finals of the Benson and Hedges Championship 26 years earlier, but that was not a full-fledged ranking tournament. In his 24th year as a professional, the Englishman achieved his best tournament result at the Paul Hunter Classic.

Kyren Wilson also struggled, losing as many frames as in the 4 previous rounds. He lost a lead twice and in the decision-making frame, in which he and his opponent Daniel Wells each scored a 54-point break, in the end he had the better end for himself. Even Scott Donaldson still 1 lead in the decider, but also and for the fourth time in his career reached a semi-final: had to go third The only one who didn't make it exciting was Peter Ebdon , who beat Lee Walker 4-1 .

With the same result, he then denied Scott Donaldson the first place in the final. Peter Lines missed that too. After turning a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead, he was missing a frame to win. But Kyren Wilson equalized with Black in the 6th frame and took the win with a high break in the decider.

final

After his first tournament victory at the Shanghai Masters in 2015 , Kyren Wilson had a dry spell with three final defeats. In his fifth ranking final he met Peter Ebdon , who had already won a world title and 12 other professional victories in his long career. Despite an age difference of more than 22 years between the two, they had known each other for a long time. Ebdon had discovered and promoted Wilson's talent early on, both knew each other very well and trained together regularly. Ebdon had the better start to the final, who designed the game tactically and put Wilson under pressure with his safety game. Only in the third frame did the younger one slowly come into play and get his first point. In the fourth frame he was able to play to his strengths in match play and balance them with a century break . After that Ebdon found it difficult to get his game through and Wilson secured the next two frames to a 4-2 win. With his second win, he was also among the top 8 players in the world rankings for the first time.
