Michael Hebgen

Michael Hebgen (born April 4, 1950 in Ludwigshafen ; † February 13, 2019 in Heidelberg ) was a German mathematician , computer scientist and university professor .

Life and professional history

Michael Hebgen and his twin brother Werner Hebgen (1950-2017) attended the Jesuit boarding school at St. Blasien from 1960 to 1968 .

After studying mathematics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , he initially worked at the University of Karlsruhe as a research assistant for the German internet pioneer Werner Zorn and was thus involved in sending and receiving the first German internet e-mails. In 1985 he became head of the communications department and deputy head of the computer center at Heidelberg University. In 2005–06 he reorganized the data center as acting director with the aim of increasing customer and service orientation. From 2007 until his retirement in 2013, he was director of the Heidelberg data center.

In addition to his work at the computing center, Hebgen was the German director of the European Academic Research Network (EARN), Secretary General of the European EARN and committee spokesman for the German Research Network (DFN) board from 1985 to 1990 . From 1992 to 1997 he was a member of the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the library sub-committee for electronic data processing and communication technologies . Together with Wolfgang König and Rainer Zillmann ( University of Frankfurt ), he designed the ultra-modern library system for the states of Berlin and Brandenburg . From 1997 to 2003 he was a member of the steering committee and the group of experts that implemented the concept in the cooperative library network Berlin-Brandenburg. From 1999 to 2003 he set up the medical education of the University of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina together with the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg as part of an EU project . In 2001, Mostar University appointed him professor for medical informatics . In 2013 he was one of the leading authors of the implementation concept of the universities of the state of Baden-Württemberg for data-intensive services (2013-2014). In addition to his numerous expert activities for the German Research Foundation DFG, the Leibniz Association and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), he was also a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Science and Politics Foundation , which supports the German Bundestag and the Federal Government in matters of foreign and security policy advises.

Michael Hebgen was married to Eva-Maria ( Evi ) Hebgen; the marriage had three children.
