Michael Kohl (born September 28, 1929 in Sondershausen ; † July 4, 1981 in East Berlin ) was a diplomat of the GDR . He was head of the permanent representation of the GDR in the Federal Republic of Germany .

Life

Kohl attended high school in Sondershausen and, after graduating from high school, studied law at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena from 1948 to 1952 , where he received his doctorate in 1956 and worked as a research assistant at the Institute for International Law until 1961 . His father, a member of the NSDAP until 1945 and then a member of the SED, had already worked as a lawyer.

In 1948 Kohl joined the SED and from 1958 to 1963 he was a member of the Gera district assembly .

From 1961 to 1973 he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , initially as a department head and from 1968 as State Secretary for West German issues, and from 1965 to 1968 State Secretary for West Berlin issues at the GDR's Council of Ministers . In 1965 Kohl was the negotiator in the pass talks and in 1970 in the negotiations on the transit agreement , the transport and basic agreement between the GDR and the Federal Republic.

In 1971 he became a member of the Foreign Policy Commission and the Western Commission at the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED and from 1976 he was a candidate for the Central Committee of the SED. In November 1973 he became Plenipotentiary Ambassador, on June 20, 1974 he was accredited as Head of the Permanent Mission of the GDR in the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn and worked there until July 1978. His successor Ewald Moldt presented his credentials on September 28, 1978. Kohl himself was finally appointed one of the deputy ministers for foreign affairs in September 1978.

In 1964, 1970 and 1972 the GDR awarded Kohl the Patriotic Order of Merit . His urn was in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the memorial of the socialists at the Berlin Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.
