Michael Schumann (politician)

Michael Schumann (born December 24, 1946 in Zella-Mehlis ; † December 2, 2000 at Gransee ) was a German professor of philosophy and politicians ( SED , PDS ).

He has been a member of the Brandenburg State Parliament since the first election after the fall of the Wall in October 1990. From 1989 to October 2000 the PDS domestic politician was a member of the federal executive board and was considered a pioneer of the party.

Life

Michael Schumann was the son of Margarete and Erwin Schumann, a foreman. Born in Zella-Mehlis, Thuringia, he attended primary school and advanced secondary school at the same location . At the same time as graduating from high school, in 1965 he acquired a cattle breeder's certificate in the nearby state-owned Gut Rohr .

From 1965 to 1970 he studied philosophy at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . The philosophical school of his teacher Helmut Seidel became the determining factor in his first years of study .

In 1967 Schumann became a member of the SED . As a research assistant at the Philosophy Department of the Marxism-Leninism Department at the German Academy for Political Science and Law  " Walter Ulbricht " in Potsdam-Babelsberg , he started his first job in one of the SED's most important cadre schools.

From November 1970 to April 1972 Schumann did his basic military service in the National People's Army (NVA). In the last months of his service he was a non-commissioned officer in a political department. During this time he married Ingeburg Schumann (née Reuss), who was employed as an industrial clerk at DEFA . He became the father of a son, Marco.

In 1986 he was appointed professor at the German Academy for Political Science and Law .

On December 16, 1989, at the Extraordinary (and final) party congress of the SED, he gave the lecture “We are irrevocably breaking with Stalinism as a system!” The SED reformer Schumann played a major role in the party's change in content.

In March 1990 he became a member of the People's Chamber and was a member of the Bundestag from October to December 1990. The Brandenburg state parliament belonged Schumann since the first election after the German reunification in October 1990th From 1989 to October 2000 he was a member of the PDS federal executive committee.

On December 2, 2000, he and his wife were killed in a traffic accident on the B 96 between Löwenberg and Gransee . He was buried in the Bornstedter Friedhof in Potsdam . On January 3, 2001, Gerrit Grosse replaced him in the state parliament.
