Michael Shannon (born August 7, 1974 in Lexington , Kentucky ) is an American actor .

Live and act

Shannon began his acting career at the Illinois Theater Center in Chicago. After roles in Groundhog Day ( 1993 ) and Out of Control ( 1996 ), he got a bigger role in Chicago Cab in 1998 . In 2000 Shannon appeared in Joel Schumacher's war drama Tigerland . In 2003 he played alongside Martin Lawrence , Will Smith and Jordi Mollà in Bad Boys II . A year earlier he played alongside rap star Eminem in 8 Mile . In 2007 Michael Shannon starred in Glück im Spiel alongside Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore . After working with directors William Friedkin , Oliver Stone and Sidney Lumet , he took on the lead role in the independent film Shotgun Stories in 2007 . His breakthrough came with the supporting role of John Givings in Sam Mendes ' drama Times of Turmoil (2008) alongside Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio . The role of the truth-loving patient in a mental hospital earned him his first Oscar nomination.

In 2009 he was in two feature films, Bad Lieutenant - Cop without a Conscience and A Caring Son , by the German director Werner Herzog . He played the role of villain General Zod in the Superman comic book adaptation Man of Steel , which appeared in June 2013 .

Shannon has worked repeatedly with director Jeff Nichols , in whose films Shotgun Stories (2007), Take Shelter (2011), Mud (2012), Midnight Special and Loving (both 2016) he played a role. In the latter, he portrayed LIFE photographer Gray Villet .
