World Trade Center is a film drama directed by Oliver Stone about the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the United States. The film, which was released in the fall of 2006 , describes the disaster from the point of view of two of the survivors of the World Trade Center collapse found, New York police officers John McLoughlin and William Jimeno.

action

The action begins in the early morning of September 11, 2001 when police officer John McLoughlin leaves his home to show up for duty. Shortly afterwards, a plane crashes into one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. At the police station of the Port Authority Police you can follow the action on CNN . Sergeant McLoughlin, Officer Will Jimeno and their colleagues rush to their location. During the journey in the confiscated bus, people speculate about the background: accident or attack? The latter assumption triggers anxiety and silence.

When they arrive at the World Trade Center, the men are faced with a horrific picture: people flee in panic, there is complete chaos, rubble rains down from the sky, a person jumps out of the burning tower. Few officials can make up their minds to support the evacuation efforts.

McLoughlin, Jimeno, "Dom" Pezzulo and Rodrigues prepare the rescue measures and enter the shopping arcade between the towers. There they obtain the breathing equipment and helmets necessary for the rescue. Jimeno reports reports of the second plane impact that he has followed on a screen. The firefighters who are already on duty have injuries and are badly battered. One prepares for a long day of evacuation.

At this moment the south tower ( WTC 2 ) collapses. The task force around McLoughlin flees into an elevator shaft while the shopping mall crumbles into ruins. Only three of the men survive, buried under concrete and steel. McLoughlin and Jimeno are constrained by massive concrete slabs and unable to move. "Dom" Pezzulo is luckier and remains largely unharmed.

Pezzuo's attempts to free his buried colleagues fail. Sergeant McLoughlin insists on another attempt at rescue and forbids Pezzulo to leave them to seek help. When the north tower ( WTC 1 ) collapses, Pezzulo is also crushed and seriously injured. He fired a shot with his service weapon in the direction of the light shining in from above to draw the attention of the rescue teams and shortly thereafter succumbed to his injuries. McLoughlin and Jimeno now no longer have the opportunity to free themselves without outside help. McLoughlin radio calls for help, but it remains unclear whether the radio is working as no responses are received.

Meanwhile, families are being informed of their missing relatives who are preparing for the worst. Jimeno's wife Allison is very pregnant. Her family supports her while she is waiting. McLoughlin's family reacts differently. The eldest son insists on the father's unauthorized search. Wife Donna cannot bring herself to do this, which leads to confrontations. Only when the son threatens to use the car without a license does Donna give in. Meanwhile, the ex-Marine Dave Karnes sets out on his own initiative to search the ruins of the World Trade Center for survivors.

While the buried men struggle with the pain and exhaustion, they seek diversion in conversations about their private life: Jimeno's wife did not agree with the choice of name for the expected daughter. He gives McLoughlin the task of communicating his relenting on this question over the radio as a last wish. The radio message is not heard. The hopes of the men sink when the 7th World Trade Center ( WTC 7 ) collapses, the shock of which also causes debris to fall down. However, a water pipe now protrudes from Jimeno within easy reach, which gives him hope for a little liquid. McLoughlin in particular, as a result of the pain and the dusty air, increasingly suffers from waking dreams and visions in which his relationship with Donna plays a central role.

It is already night when the ex-Marine Karnes meets another volunteer in the rubble and, together with him, searches the rubble landscape for survivors. Jimeno hears their calls while McLoughlin is almost passed out. Jimeno tries to use the rattling water pipe to draw the attention of Karnes and his companion to them, which ultimately succeeds. Reinforcement is requested and the relatives are informed of the sign of life. There they initially believe that the rescue has already taken place, which leads to incomprehension and anger after the relatives arrive at the authorities.

The rescue turned out to be difficult, as the men are buried about 6 to 10 meters deep under the rubble and the pile of rubble continues to lose stability due to fires and extinguishing measures. At the risk of their lives, the emergency services first reach the higher Jimeno, which appears more stable in terms of health. After attempts to free Jimeno with a hydraulic spreader initially fail, Jimeno demands the amputation of his trapped leg in order to clear the way to McLoughlin as quickly as possible. But the helpers refuse and finally they manage to free Jimeno. While Jimeno is being cared for in the hospital, the helpers are still working to rescue McLoughlin from the rubble. In the hospital, the seriously injured men are expected by their relieved wives.

Two years after the attacks, the two men meet with their families. McLoughlin limps badly, Jimeno has kept no visible damage. During this scene, actors Cage and Peña greet the real McLoughlin and Jimeno.

According to statements in the opening and closing credits, the plot is based on factual reports. McLoughlin and Jimeno were the survivors 18 and 19 of a total of 20 people found alive. Due to their injuries, both were given early retirement. Ex-Marine Dave Karnes, who was involved in the rescue, committed himself to serving in the later Iraq war .

background

  • In contrast to the film Flight 93 about the events of September 11, 2001, Stone did not get support from every survivor of the terrorist attacks. The first screenings of the official cinema trailer in mid-May 2006 caused a stir in some US cinemas , like on Flight 93 .
  • The World Trade Center was filmed in the US state of New Jersey and also in New York itself. Scenes that take place at Ground Zero were filmed in Marina del Rey , California , because the population did not want to be confronted with the events again. In order to cover up the fact that the scenes were not created at Ground Zero, elaborate backdrops were set up for the exterior and interior shots and computer-generated images were created. The original blueprints were used for the interior photos of the World Trade Center. Apart from the “live broadcasts” on the television screens, the World Trade Center was completely recreated and inserted as a CGI element.
  • A documentary about the real William "Will" Jimeno has been published by Spiegel TV with the title "The longest day of Will Jimeno - A true heroic story".
  • The film is an international co-production by the US American Paramount Pictures and Double Feature Films with the British Intermedia Films and the German Kernos Filmproduktionsgesellschaft & Company .

reception

“In its undisguised emotionality, the utterly apolitical film has more therapeutic than historically illuminating qualities. There is no trace of the rebellious director of earlier days who was critical of the government. "
