Michel Camilo (born April 4, 1954 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic ) is a contemporary pianist and composer in the jazz and classical genre . He is also active as a producer and won several Grammys and an Emmy Award (The Goodwill Games Theme).

biography

Camilo was born in Santo Domingo on April 4, 1954. He took classical piano lessons at the National Conservatory there and at the age of 16 became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. In 1979 he moved to New York . After recording two Latin jazz albums ("Why Not?" And "Suntan / In Trio") he performed there for the first time in 1985 at Carnegie Hall . Since then he has been touring the USA , the Caribbean , Japan and Europe with a wide variety of line-ups . In December 1987 he began his career as a conductor of classical music. He led the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic with works by Rimski-Korsakow , Ludwig van Beethoven , Dvořák and on his own composition. From 1987 to 1992 he was the musical director of the Heineken Jazz Festival in the Dominican Republic.

Between 1988 and 1990 he released three very successful jazz albums ("Michel Camilo", "On Fire" and "On The Other Hand") and worked for the first time with major labels ( Sony and Columbia ).

In the nineties he worked with the renowned pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque as well as with Dizzy Gillespie and published the "Rhapsody for Two Pianos and Orchestra", as well as the albums "Rendezvous" with Dave Weckl ( dr ) and Anthony Jackson ( b ), " One More Once ”(with Big Band ) and“ Thru My Eyes ”with Anthony Jackson and John Patitucci , Lincoln Goines (all b ), Cliff Almond and Horacio“ El Negro ”Hernández (both dr ). In 1998 his 1st piano concerto was given at the first Latin-Caribbean Music Festival in the J. F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts ” premiered in Washington, DC . As with the recording of the piano concerto, Camilo worked here with the “National Symphony Orchestra” under the conductor Leonard Slatkin .

A duet with the renowned Spanish flamenco - guitarist Tomatito Camilo took in 2000 on the album "Spain", which in a great tradition (s. Bill Evans and Jim Hall ) the title of "Best Latin Jazz Album" at the first ever advertised Latin Grammy Award (2000 ) won. In 2001 he started teaching - e. B. at the Berklee School of Music and at MIT . In August 2003 Camilo gave concerts for a week in the legendary jazz club Blue Note of the label of the same name in order to present a cross-section of his life's work on the double CD album "Live at the Blue Note". He played in a classical jazz trio with H. Hernandez and the bassist Charles Flores. The album won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2003.

In January 2005 the album "Rhapsody In Blue" was released, which he recorded together with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya. After an acclaimed concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2005 together with Tomatito , both recorded a second album entitled "Spain Again", which was released in May 2006. In addition to original compositions, it also contains jazz standards and a “Tribute to Piazzolla ” entitled “Libertango ”.
