Mighty Servant is the name of heavy-duty ships that are used specifically for the transport of extremely heavy and bulky objects such as oil platforms . These ships are known as semi-submersible ships based on their structural design and functionality.

The special thing about the ships is the ability to lower the loading area below the surface of the water by lowering the entire ship, so that the cargo to be transported can be swum in or pulled onto the deck by tugs. Positioning and balancing the cargo is a risky maneuver; minimal errors can result in the entire ship and cargo capsizing and sinking.

The three ships built so far ( Mighty Servant 1 , Mighty Servant 2 and Mighty Servant 3 ) were built for the Dutch shipping company Wijsmuller Transport , which merged with Dock Express Shipping in 1993 to form the Dutch company Dockwise .

The maximum speed of the ship is 14  knots . The ship sails under the flag of the Netherlands Antilles (call sign: PJVZ, IMO No. 8130875).

The Mighty Servant 2 sailed under the flag of the Netherlands Antilles (call sign: PJPS, IMO No. 8130887) until her sinking.

Well-known projects

In the USA , the series was best known for the transport of the US Navy frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts : In July 1988 the frigate was badly damaged by a mine in the Persian Gulf. It was decided to repair the Roberts at Bath Iron Works . The Mighty Servant 2 loaded the warship for this in a twelve-hour maneuver and transported it over 8,000 miles to a US port.

Accidents

On November 2, 1999, the Mighty Servant 2 capsized near the Indonesian island of Singkep with a load of almost 9,000 tons of offshore equipment and sank when it ran aground in calm seas, presumably on an unmapped, solitary shoal . Five sailors were killed in the accident.

The same fate befell the ship Mighty Servant 3 on December 6, 2006 , when it listed after unloading a drilling platform off the coast of Angola and sank a short time later in the 62 m deep sea. This did not result in personal injury, and the crew could be picked up by ships in the vicinity. The Mighty Servant 3 was salvaged, then repaired and put back into service by Smit Internationale .
