Mike Flanagan (born May 20, 1978 in Salem , Massachusetts ) is an American film editor , director , producer and screenwriter .

life and career

Mike Flanagan was born in 1978 in Salem, Massachusetts to Timothy and Laura Flanagan. With his father working for the US Coast Guard, the family was forced to move frequently until they eventually settled in Bowie, Maryland. At the Archbishop Spalding High School in Severna Park he was active in the school theater group and became president of the Student Government Association there. He also organized a morning television program here and produced commercials for students.

After graduating from Towson University with a degree in Electronic Media and Film, Flanagan made his debut film Makebelieve in 2000 at the age of 21. Still Life followed in 2001 . In 2002 he began producing television formats for Discovery and ESPN. In 2003 he directed Ghosts of Hamilton Street , for which he also wrote the screenplay. In the same year he acted as cameraman for the film Chainsaw Sally by Jimmy O Burril . After moving from Baltimore to Los Angeles the day after the film was completed, he began directing and film editor for the National Lampoon Networks' Gleib Show and a number of other television shows.

In 2005, Flanagan first turned to the horror genre with the short film Oculus . In 2010 he directed the independent horror film Absentia , for which he also wrote the screenplay. In 2015 his film Before I Wake followed and in 2016 Ouija: Origin of Evil and Hush , which was released exclusively on Netflix. As a result, Flanagan also shot Das Spiel for the streaming service , an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Stephen King , which premiered on September 24, 2017 as part of the Fantastic Festival and was released in selected US cinemas on September 29, 2017 . In 2019, Doctor Sleeps Awakening, his second King film adaptation, followed the novel Doctor Sleep .

As of 2005, Flanagan was married to actress Shea Cerveny . The marriage was divorced in 2010. His eldest son Rigby Flanagan-Bell emerged in 2010 from a relationship with actress Courtney Bell , with whom he worked for the film Absentia . In February 2016, he married actress Kate Siegel . They have a son together.
